How to recognise it

Tylopilus potamogeton announces its genus before it announces its species: the pinkish pore surface is the first thing to register when you turn a fresh specimen over.

Cap

Medium to large, pale buff to ochre-brown, velvety in youth and smooth with age - unremarkable until you crouch down and look at the underside.

Pores

Instead of the white or yellow pores of a porcini or the red pores of a toxic Rubroboletus, you see a pale creamy-white pore surface that ages through cream to soft flesh-pink or pale rose. That pink is diagnostic for Tylopilus across the entire genus.

Stem

Pale, firm, and often bears faint reticulation on the upper portion.

Flesh

White throughout and does not blue when cut - an important separator from the bluing boletes.

Smell & taste

The smell is mild and forgettable. The taste is not. A tiny sliver held on the tongue for just a few seconds delivers an intense, persistent bitterness unlike almost any other bolete.

That bitterness is the species' most reliable single identifier and the reason no cooking method ever makes it palatable.

Where & when it grows

Habitat

The name tells you exactly where to look. Potamogeton is Greek for 'river neighbor,' and T. potamogeton delivers on that etymology: this is a bolete of stream banks, creekside galleries, and the humid, shaded terrain immediately adjacent to flowing water in South American forest.

While many boletes prefer the better-drained crests and slopes of forest ridges, T. potamogeton favors the perpetually moist lower terrain - mossy banks, shaded understory near permanent streams, places where humidity stays high even in drier months.

The soil it grows in is rich, dark, and layered with decomposing leaf litter from the overhanging canopy, making it classic ectomycorrhizal bolete territory.

Its likely host trees include Alnus (alder species that colonize streamside and riverine zones throughout the Andean and subtropical South American range) and Nothofagus at higher elevations.

Stream corridors in intact subtropical and temperate forest - particularly in southern Brazil, Misiones, and the wetter montane zones of northwestern Argentina - are the sites most likely to produce it.

When

The broad fruiting window runs from austral late summer into autumn: January through May, with the peak concentrated in February-April depending on latitude and elevation.

In the warmer subtropical fringes of its range, where the wet season delivers reliable rainfall through January and February, early fruiting is possible. At cooler Andean elevations and higher-latitude Patagonian sites, the window contracts toward March-April.

The riparian microhabitat that defines this species acts as a buffer against drought: even in years when the surrounding forest floor dries out earlier than usual, the streamside position retains enough moisture to sustain fruiting longer.

A useful rule of thumb: look for T. potamogeton ten to fourteen days after a sustained rain event of 20 mm or more, while soil temperatures remain above 10 °C - the triggering conditions for ectomycorrhizal bolete flushes across much of the Southern Hemisphere.

How it grows

Fruits singly or in small scattered groups of two to four; not gregarious.

As an obligate ectomycorrhizal species it cannot be cultivated, and its fruiting depends entirely on the health of its living host trees - which in this species' case are tied to intact riparian forest.

Single fruitbodies push up through the moist leaf litter from below, developing from a small button over roughly ten days to a full-sized cap.

Because streamside forest in South America remains under significant pressure from clearance and water diversion, productive populations are most reliably found in protected or remote forest corridors where riparian integrity is maintained.

Fruiting conditions

Fruiting triggered by sustained rain (20+ mm over two weeks) while soil temperatures remain in the 10-20 °C range, typical of austral late summer and autumn (January-May). The riparian microhabitat buffers against drought: streamside soils remain moist longer than adjacent forest floor, extending the effective season. Peak fruiting falls in February-April (ISO weeks 5-15) across most of the known range. A 7-14 day flush lag from triggering rainfall is consistent with the general pattern for mycorrhizal boletes in this climate zone.

Look-alikes

In riparian South American forest, the most important comparisons are with other brownish or buff-capped boletes.

Other Tylopilus species have similarly pale buff caps and pink pore surfaces, and are distinguished principally by habitat, host, and fine morphological details. All share the defining intense bitterness of the genus and are equally inedible - so misidentifying one Tylopilus for another carries no additional risk.

Edible brownish boletes such as Boletus edulis and its relatives, or the regional Butyriboletus loyo of central Chile, are separated by their white (young) to yellow (older) pore surfaces that never develop the rose-pink tone of Tylopilus; they also taste mild and pleasant, not bitter.

Suillus species (slippery jacks) introduced into the region via pine plantations have slimy, glutinous caps and, in many cases, a ring on the stem - incompatible with T. potamogeton.

The critical general bolete safety rules apply:

  • Never eat any bolete with red or orange pore surfaces (indicating Rubroboletus or related toxic species, none of which are confirmed in South America but which represent the theoretical upper end of bolete danger).
  • Never eat a bolete that blues intensely on cutting without expert confirmation.

A bolete that turns out to be any Tylopilus is a fortunate mistake in one sense - the bitterness is its own defense - but the forager's time is better spent confirming what is edible rather than relying on unpleasant taste as a safety net.

Bitter Tylopilus species

Other Tylopilus species sharing the pinkish pore surface and bitter taste can occur in overlapping ranges. All are inedible for the same reason - extreme bitterness - so distinguishing one Tylopilus from another carries no change in safety outcome. Differentiation requires close attention to cap surface texture, stem reticulation, host trees, habitat position, and spore dimensions.

King Bolete / Porcini

Similar cap colour and size, but pore surface remains white then pale yellow - never pinkening to rose-buff as in Tylopilus. Flesh is mild-tasting and pleasant, completely lacking the intense bitterness of T. potamogeton. Cap surface often more chestnut-brown or hazel; stem more prominently and sharply reticulate. An important edible species that T. potamogeton should not be confused with - always taste a tiny raw fragment (spit out immediately): any intense bitterness means Tylopilus, not porcini.

Loyo

Prized edible of central-southern Chile; has a chestnut to dark reddish-brown cap, vivid yellow pore surface, yellow flesh that does not blue, and a pleasant, nutty smell and taste. Distinguished from T. potamogeton immediately by yellow pores (not white to pink) and by its mild, agreeable flavour. Does not occur in riparian positions as characteristically as T. potamogeton.

In the kitchen

Picking & cleaning

Tylopilus potamogeton should not be collected for eating. The extreme bitterness that saturates the flesh is not a surface compound that cooks out - it is present throughout the fruitbody and persists through boiling, frying, and drying.

There is no culinary tradition involving this or related bitter Tylopilus species in South America, and no preparation method is known to render it palatable.

If encountered in the field, it merits a close look and a spore print for identification purposes. The key characters to note before leaving it to sporulate in place:

  • Pink-to-rose-buff pore surface
  • White, non-bluing flesh
  • Unforgettable bitterness on the tip of the tongue (use a tiny fragment and spit immediately)

Good to know

Tylopilus potamogeton is not known to contain chemical toxins. It is classified as inedible solely on the basis of organoleptic unacceptability - the extreme, pervasive bitterness makes it impossible to eat in any quantity.

No poisoning cases attributable to this species appear in the mycological literature, and accidental ingestion of a small fragment would be self-limiting: the bitterness acts as a natural deterrent against significant consumption.

That said, any wild mushroom consumed in quantity without confident identification carries inherent risk, and this species has not been subject to formal chemical analysis. If any gastrointestinal symptoms follow accidental ingestion, consult a medical professional and identify the species if possible.

The absence of confirmed toxins does not mean absence of all risk - it means only that this species is not known to be poisonous at this time.
