How to recognise it

Tylopilus nigerrimus is one of the most uniformly black boletes in the world - a striking, almost surreal fruit body that looks as if it has been dipped in ink.

The entire mushroom, cap, pore surface, and stem alike, is jet-black to dark blue-black when fresh; in age or on drying it fades toward sooty olive-brown, but never loses its deeply dark character.

Cap

The cap surface is dry to slightly velvety, never slimy.

Stem

Near the top of the stem, a fine reticulate pattern is present but nearly invisible against the dark background - worth checking under good light or a hand lens.

Flesh & pores

Slice the mushroom open and the contrast is immediate: the pore surface is among the darkest of any bolete, yet the flesh beneath is white to pale grey and stays that way, or discolours only very faintly.

Critically, it does NOT blue on cutting, unlike the toxic Rubroboletus species.

The genus-level diagnostic that clinches identification is the spore print: Tylopilus always produces pink to pinkish-buff spores, separating it from the white-spored Boletus group.

Establishing this requires leaving a cap section print-side-down on white paper for several hours - it cannot be confirmed in the field without doing so.

Why it's dangerous

The danger level of Tylopilus nigerrimus is moderate: it is genuinely poisonous, causes documented gastrointestinal illness, and is not safe to eat in any preparation.

However, it is not in the lethal tier - no deaths are attributed to it and organ failure has not been reported.

The key risk factor in practice is misidentification. A forager unfamiliar with Asian boletes might pick it alongside edible dark boletes, or mistake a young specimen for an edible species.

In East Asian markets and during commercial wild harvest, species sorting errors are the primary exposure pathway. The unusual all-black coloration should itself prompt caution in any forager who encounters it.

Toxin

The toxic compounds in Tylopilus nigerrimus have not been fully isolated and characterised. But the observed poisoning pattern - rapid onset gastrointestinal distress, recovery within 12-24 hours in most cases - is consistent with a gastrointestinal irritant that may include:

  • heat-stable phenolic compounds
  • uncharacterised lectins
  • other secondary metabolites common to bitter Tylopilus species

Chinese toxicological surveys list it among bolete species causing Type VII (gastrointestinal) mushroom poisoning.

The bitter taste is a trait of many Tylopilus species, from which the genus takes its name: Greek tylos = lump, pilos = cap, and Latin pilus; the English 'bitter bolete' grouping. This taste is a deterrent, but it does not prevent poisoning in those who consume it cooked or in mixed dishes where bitterness is masked.

Symptoms

Ingestion causes gastrointestinal distress: nausea, profuse vomiting, epigastric pain, and watery diarrhoea, typically onset within 0.5-3 hours of eating.

Severity depends on amount ingested and individual sensitivity. Most cases self-resolve within 12-24 hours with rest and fluid replacement.

Dehydration from vomiting and diarrhoea is the main complication in otherwise healthy adults; children, the elderly, and those with underlying conditions warrant closer medical monitoring.

There are no reports of organ damage, neurological symptoms, or fatality from this species specifically.

Staying safe

Tylopilus nigerrimus is documented as poisonous.

Poisoning cases recorded in China describe gastrointestinal illness - nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhoea - beginning within 30 minutes to 3 hours of ingestion.

No fatalities have been firmly attributed to this species, and the toxin mechanism is not fully characterised, but the gastrointestinal irritant fraction appears heat-stable (symptoms occur even from cooked material).

No antidote beyond supportive care exists. In the event of ingestion, seek medical attention and bring a specimen or photograph.

The safe course of action is to never eat this species. The dramatic black coloration is a warning, not an invitation.

Where & when it grows

Habitat

Tylopilus nigerrimus grows in the warm, humid broadleaved forests of East and Southeast Asia, always in mycorrhizal partnership with trees in the beech family (Fagaceae) - oaks, chestnuts, and their relatives.

In southern China and Taiwan it is a familiar summer and autumn species in montane oak and chestnut forests; in Japan it is widespread across Honshu and Kyushu in broadleaved and mixed montane woodland.

It is a thermophilic species: it needs sustained warmth and high humidity, and its fruiting is tightly coupled to the monsoon.

Look for it emerging through the leaf duff on acidic, well-drained mineral soils, often on slopes or ridges where the roots of large, established trees run close to the surface.

When

The fruiting season of Tylopilus nigerrimus is closely coupled to the East Asian monsoon: rain and warm soil temperatures above 20 °C are the primary triggers.

In most of its range, June through September is the core season, peaking in July and August when monsoon rains are most intense and reliable.

At higher elevations in Yunnan, Sichuan, or Taiwan, the season may shift slightly later, peaking in August-September.

The lag between a meaningful rain event and visible fruit bodies is typically 7-14 days, consistent with other mycorrhizal boletes in warm climates. Fruiting is sharply suppressed by drought or temperatures below 18 °C.

How it grows

As a mycorrhizal species, Tylopilus nigerrimus forms ectomycorrhizal associations with the fine roots of its host trees, exchanging mineral nutrients (particularly phosphorus and water) for photosynthetically fixed sugars.

It is therefore impossible to cultivate in isolation, and appears only where appropriate host trees and soil microbiome are established.

The fruit body develops rapidly under warm, moist conditions - from pin to mature mushroom in 5-10 days - and deteriorates quickly in the humid tropical and subtropical climate where it grows.

The mycelium is perennial, and familiar sites may produce fruit in successive years when conditions are favourable.

Fruiting conditions

Thermophilic monsoon species requiring warm soil (>18 °C) and abundant rainfall. Closely tied to the East Asian summer monsoon; onset of monsoon rains reliably triggers fruiting. Short flush lag consistent with other subtropical boletes. Drought or cool spells interrupt fruiting sharply.

Look-alikes

Several dark or blackening boletes occur in the same habitats, and sorting among them requires attention to flesh reaction, spore print, and detailed cap/stem characters.

  • Tylopilus alboater (black bitter bolete): closely related and similarly dark-capped, but has white to greyish-white pores when young - not jet-black - and is reported as inedible to possibly toxic.
  • Tylopilus plumbeoviolaceus: plum-violet to dark grey-violet cap and stem, white pore surface, distinctly different in tone.
  • Boletus aereus (bronze bolete): can be very dark brown-black in cap colour but always has yellow-white to creamy-white pores and olive-yellow flesh that does not turn pink-spored; an excellent edible.
  • Suillellus luridus and related lurid boletes: can be very dark but blue intensely and immediately on cutting - Tylopilus nigerrimus does not blue.

None of the typical confusions in East Asian forests involve a deadly lookalike.

The primary field risk is an unwary forager treating any dark bolete as safe, or confusing it with edible dark-capped boletes such as Boletus aereus.

Black bitter bolete

Tylopilus alboater has a very dark brownish-black to slate-black cap but its pore surface is white to pale grey when young - not jet-black - turning pinkish in age as spores mature. Flesh is white, not bluing. Both species are bitter and inedible to toxic. T. alboater has a more easterly distribution reaching North America; T. nigerrimus is primarily Asian.

Bronze bolete

Boletus aereus can have an extremely dark brown-black cap but always has white to creamy-yellow pores (never black), yellow flesh that does not change on cutting, and a yellow-tinted stem reticulum. It produces a yellowish-olive spore print - not pink. It is an excellent edible species; the pale pore surface is the simplest field separation from Tylopilus nigerrimus.

Lurid bolete

Suillellus luridus has a dark brownish-olivaceous cap but a vivid red-orange pore surface and blued intensely and immediately on cutting - the flesh turns blue-black within seconds. T. nigerrimus does not blue significantly. S. luridus is edible when thoroughly cooked; it is primarily a European species with limited Asian overlap.

Plum-violet bitter bolete

Tylopilus plumbeoviolaceus has a distinctly plum-violet to slate-violet tint on the cap and stem, with a white to pale pink pore surface. The colour tone is cooler and more purple-violet than the jet-black T. nigerrimus. Also bitter and inedible.
