How to recognise it
Rubroboletus sinicus is a large, strikingly coloured bolete whose vivid visual signals - blood-red pores, carmine-reticulate stem, instant blue-black flesh - are nature's honest advertisement of toxicity.
Cap
The cap is deceivingly dull by comparison: 8-22 cm across, beginning as a tight hemisphere and slowly flattening through adulthood. The surface is dry and finely felted, a pale greyish-buff to whitish-ochre colour that can superficially resemble the cap of a porcini (Boletus edulis) or related edible boletes sold alongside it in Yunnan markets.
This pallid cap is the camouflage that makes accidental collection possible. Below it, however, the diagnostic features are unmistakable to anyone who knows what to look for.
Pores
The pore surface - the spongy layer of tube mouths covering the underside - is vivid blood-red to scarlet in young specimens, fading only slightly to orange-red as the mushroom ages. The tubes themselves grade from yellow near the cap flesh down to red at their mouths.
Stem
The stem is stout, barrel-shaped to slightly bulbous at the base, and decorated across most of its surface with a coarse, raised network of vivid carmine veins on a yellow to orange background - the reticulation that defines the genus name Rubroboletus (from Latin ruber, red, and boletus).
Flesh
Cut into the flesh anywhere - cap, stem, tube layer - and the transformation is nearly immediate: the pale yellow tissue floods deep blue-black within five to ten seconds, driven by the rapid oxidation of variegatic acid and related quinone pigments on contact with oxygen in the air. This bluing reaction is one of the fastest and most intense in any known bolete.
Smell & taste
The odour in young fruitbodies is mild or faintly earthy; in older specimens it becomes distinctly unpleasant and fetid. The taste is bitter to acrid in most collections.
Spore print olive-brown; spores 11-16 × 4-6 µm, fusiform, smooth.
Why it's dangerous
DEADLY TOXIC. Do not eat. Do not taste. Cooking does not make this species safe to eat.
Rubroboletus sinicus is among the most dangerous wild mushrooms in China's Yunnan Province and is a documented cause of fatal poisoning in the published Chinese medical and toxicological literature.
It is primarily dangerous because it co-occurs with highly prized edible boletes in the same habitat and season, appears in the same market channels, and its pallid cap can resemble that of an edible porcini to collectors who fail to inspect the pore surface.
The rule is absolute: any bolete with red or orange pores, especially one whose flesh turns blue when cut, must not be eaten.
If you are in Yunnan or purchasing Yunnan wild mushrooms and suspect accidental ingestion of a red-pored bolete:
- Call emergency services immediately - do not wait for symptoms to appear.
- Bring a sample or photograph of the mushroom for identification.
- Inform medical staff immediately that red-pored bolete ingestion is suspected, as this directs appropriate supportive care.
- Contact China Poison Control (全国中毒控制中心) or the Yunnan CDC poison hotline without delay.
Toxin
The principal toxic class in Rubroboletus sinicus is ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs) of the bolesatin type - thermostable glycoproteins that inhibit protein synthesis by inactivating the 60S ribosomal subunit, preventing the elongation step of mRNA translation.
At the cellular level the result is shutdown of protein biosynthesis in susceptible cells, particularly rapidly dividing enterocytes lining the gut, hepatocytes in the liver, and renal tubular cells.
This mechanism is distinct from amatoxin (RNA polymerase II inhibition) but shares the end-point of disrupted cellular protein production, with the important difference that onset is rapid (minutes to hours rather than 6-24 hours).
Additional toxic components include variegatic acid and its quinone oxidation products - the compounds responsible for the spectacular bluing reaction - which contribute directly to oxidative damage of gut mucosa.
Uncharacterised thermostable lectins and other toxic glycoproteins are likely also present, based on comparative chemistry of Rubroboletus satanas and extrapolation from Chinese toxicology reports.
The concentration of toxic compounds is highest in the pore layer and in actively growing young fruitbodies. Even partial cooking reduces, but does not eliminate, toxicity.
Symptoms
Onset of symptoms is rapid, typically beginning within 15 minutes to 2 hours of ingestion - considerably faster than the delayed-onset pattern of amatoxin poisoning, which distinguishes this toxidrome clinically.
Initial symptoms are dominated by acute severe gastroenteritis:
- violent and profuse vomiting
- intense watery or bloody diarrhoea
- severe cramping abdominal pain
- nausea
- drenching sweats
- prostration
These symptoms are typically more intense than those caused by the related European R. satanas.
In documented Chinese cases involving significant ingestion, the syndrome can progress beyond pure gastroenteritis to multi-organ involvement:
- acute liver injury (elevated transaminases, jaundice in severe cases)
- acute kidney injury (reduced urine output, rising creatinine)
- rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown with myoglobinuria, causing cola-coloured urine)
- neurological signs including confusion, agitation, and, in extreme cases, seizures and loss of consciousness
Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance are universal in severe cases and are the immediate life-threatening risk. Death has been documented in cases of large-quantity consumption without prompt medical intervention.
Symptoms from pure gastroenteritis resolve in 24-72 hours with supportive care; multi-organ involvement requires intensive medical management and recovery may take days to weeks.
Staying safe
Rubroboletus sinicus is responsible for serious and potentially lethal poisoning in China, most frequently in Yunnan Province, where wild boletes are consumed in large quantities and where the mushroom markets of Kunming handle enormous volumes of mixed-species collections from hundreds of rural suppliers.
The Yunnan CDC and national disease surveillance systems have documented multiple mass-poisoning events implicating red-pored boletes, with Rubroboletus sinicus and closely related species consistently identified as the causative agents. Outcomes have included severe gastroenteritis, haemorrhagic gastritis, acute liver injury, acute kidney injury, rhabdomyolysis, neurological complications, and death.
The lethal potential is real and documented: unlike the European R. satanas (where confirmed deaths are not established in the peer-reviewed literature), the East Asian Rubroboletus poisoning syndrome in Yunnan has been associated with fatal outcomes in severe cases, particularly where large quantities were consumed or where medical care was delayed.
The toxin is not reliably destroyed by cooking - the primary ribosome-inactivating glycoprotein (bolesatin-class) is thermostable to a significant degree, and cooking reduces but does not eliminate toxicity. Do not eat this species raw or cooked.
Do not assume that because a bolete was collected in summer from a mountainside in Yunnan, or purchased from a market, it has been vetted as safe. Treat any red-pored bolete in East Asian markets or forests as a potentially life-threatening species.
Where & when it grows
Habitat
Rubroboletus sinicus forms mycorrhizal partnerships with a range of deciduous trees in southern China's montane forests - the oaks, chestnuts, and chinquapins of the Hengduan Mountains and Yunnan Plateau, and occasionally pines in mixed stands.
Yunnan Province, sitting at elevations of 1,500-3,000 m on the southeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, provides the combination the species needs: warm but not hot summers, consistent monsoonal moisture from June to September, and extensive broadleaf forest on mineral-rich upland soils.
The species fruits on slopes and in open forest, often where light penetrates to warm the soil surface. It is most abundant in the oak-chestnut-Castanopsis forest belt between roughly 1,800 and 2,500 m, where annual precipitation is 800-1,200 mm concentrated in the summer months.
The same forest type produces several prized edible boletes - Boletus yunnanensis, Boletus bainiugan, various Leccinum and Aureoboletus species - with which R. sinicus shares habitat and appearance.
This ecological overlap with commercially valuable edible species is precisely what drives the repeated poisoning incidents documented from Yunnan's wild mushroom markets, where mixed collections of boletes arrive from rural collectors and are not always inspected for the deadly interloper.
When
The fruiting window of Rubroboletus sinicus in Yunnan runs from late May or June through October, entirely aligned with the southwest monsoon.
The monsoon arrives in Yunnan in late May to early June, rapidly increasing rainfall and maintaining soil moisture through September; the first significant flush of boletes - including R. sinicus - follows the establishment of this rain pattern by five to fourteen days, as the mycelium responds to rising soil moisture and temperature.
The peak of fruiting typically falls from late June through August, coinciding with the height of the mushroom trading season in Kunming and other Yunnan cities. This is when wild mushroom markets brim with freshly collected boletes, and when the risk of accidental ingestion of R. sinicus is highest.
A secondary, smaller flush may occur after any temporary dry spell breaks in late August or September. Fruiting essentially ceases once monsoon rainfall withdraws, usually in October, and the cooling of upland soils below 14°C brings the season to an end.
How it grows
Like all Rubroboletus species, R. sinicus leads most of its life as an invisible underground mycelium - a branching network of hyphae threaded through the mineral soil in close association with the fine root tips of oaks, chestnuts, and related trees.
The relationship is mycorrhizal: the fungal hyphae sheath the root tips in a dense mantle and extend outward through the soil as a water-and-nutrient-gathering net, dramatically extending the effective foraging reach of the host tree's root system. In exchange, the tree supplies the fungus with photosynthetically fixed carbon.
This partnership can persist for decades at a single site - a productive location for Rubroboletus typically returns fruitbodies in the same patch, season after season, reflecting the enduring architecture of the mycelial network.
When soil moisture rises after monsoon rain and temperature is adequate, the mycelium diverts resources into producing fruitbodies. Tiny hyphal knots form in the mineral soil, swell rapidly through button and egg stages, and can push a full-sized fruitbody above ground in 48-72 hours under ideal conditions.
Fruiting bodies appear singly or scattered - the aboveground tip of a hidden network - and mature over five to ten days before softening and collapsing.
Fruiting conditions
Strongly coupled to monsoon rainfall in Yunnan; requires warm, moist soil and consistent ambient humidity above ~70%. Fruiting peaks in the first flush after monsoon rains establish in June and again after any dry spell breaks in late July-August. Soil temperatures in the upland oak-chestnut forest of Yunnan's central plateau (around 1,800-2,500 m elevation) rarely exceed 22°C, so this species fits comfortably within the warmer range of the fruiting window.
Look-alikes
In the wild mushroom markets and forests of Yunnan, the most critical confusion risks are the following.
- Boletus yunnanensis (Yunnan cep / 云南牛肝菌) is a prized edible species co-occurring in Yunnan oak forest; it has white to pale cream pores, white or pale yellow flesh that does not blue, a reticulate stem with pale netting, and a pleasant mild odour - the absence of any red on the pore surface and the non-bluing flesh reliably separate it from R. sinicus.
- Boletus bainiugan (白牛肝菌, Chinese porcini) is another top-quality edible of the region; it shares a broadly similar cap colour but has creamy-white pores, white flesh with at most a very slow and weak blue tint, and no red colouration anywhere.
- Boletus reticulatus (summer cep) and other European porcini relatives occasionally appear in discussion but are not the primary field risk in Yunnan; the same pore-colour rule applies.
- Rubroboletus satanas (Satan's bolete) is a geographically separated European species but is essentially a sibling taxon - if someone encounters R. sinicus and wonders about species identity, R. satanas is the closest published reference; both are equally deadly.
- Other undescribed or recently described red-pored bluing boletes from Yunnan and adjacent regions (several new Rubroboletus species have been described in the past decade) share the same toxicity class and the same red-pores-plus-bluing diagnosis - all must be avoided.
- Neoboletus brunneissimus (a bluing bolete present in Yunnan) has orange to reddish-brown pores and blues but is in a different genus; it is treated as poisonous and should similarly be avoided.
The European Satan's bolete is a sibling species essentially identical in appearance and toxicity to R. sinicus; it is found in calcareous oak-beech-chestnut woodland in Europe and is not normally found in China. The two species are distinguished primarily by geography, minor morphological characters visible only microscopically, and associated host trees. In the field they are virtually indistinguishable - both are equally deadly. R. satanas has a slightly more whitish-grey cap tone on average and a typically more bulbous, squat stem.
Boletus bainiugan is a prized edible with creamy-white pores, white to pale cream flesh with at most a very slow, faint bluish tint, and a pleasant mild odour. It is one of the most commercially important edible boletes of Yunnan. Pores are never red; stem reticulation is pale; no fetid odour in any stage of maturity. The absence of red pores and the non-bluing (or very weakly bluing) flesh reliably distinguish it from R. sinicus.
A bluing bolete of Yunnan with orange-brown to reddish-brown pores and strongly bluing flesh; it occurs in the same montane forests. The pore colour is more orange-brown and less vivid scarlet than in R. sinicus, and the cap is darker brown to umber rather than pale buff. The species is treated as poisonous by Chinese authorities and must not be eaten regardless of the specific identification. The combination of any reddish-orange pores plus bluing flesh is sufficient reason to reject any bolete.
Boletus reticulatus has white to pale yellow pores, a brown cracking cap, pale reticulate stem, and white flesh that does not blue or blues only very weakly and slowly. The pore surface is never red at any growth stage. An uncomplicated separation: check the pore surface colour before collecting any bolete.
Boletus yunnanensis has white to pale cream pores - never red or orange - and white flesh that does not turn blue when cut. The stem reticulation is pale tan or whitish, not carmine. It shares the same habitat, season, and general cap colour in Yunnan forests, making careful pore inspection essential for every specimen. The absence of any red on the pore surface and the non-bluing flesh are absolute separation points.
