Honey dapperling
Lepiota helveolasyn. Lepiota helveola Bres., Agaricus helveolus
Toxic - and the most serious cases can be fatal. Never eat it, and wash your hands after handling.
Never eat a mushroom you are not 100% sure of - check the look-alikes below, and always cook wild mushrooms.
How to recognise it
Cap
Cap 2-6 cm, convex to broadly umbonate - a modest, quietly patterned little mushroom. The background colour is a warm pale honey-yellow to ochre-buff, overlaid with darker ochre-brown to reddish-brown fibrous scales that crowd the centre and thin out toward the margin.
Flesh
White and thin, unchanging when cut or bruised.
Gills / Pores
Gills free from the stem, crowded, white to cream, and they stay that way. White spore print.
Stem
Stem 3-7 cm, white above a fragile ring, then draped in pale ochre fibrous scales below. The ring itself is membranous-fibrous, whitish to ochre, sometimes movable or fraying away.
Smell & taste
Smell faint - radish-like or faintly sweetish-unpleasant.
Why it's dangerous
Lepiota helveola is responsible for confirmed human fatalities in France and is considered one of the most dangerous small dapperlings in the Mediterranean basin.
Its danger is compounded by:
- 1its occurrence in gardens, parks, and everyday grassland settings where it may be encountered by non-mycologists;
- 2its resemblance to other small harmless grassland fungi;
- 3the long symptom-free latency that delays medical help;
- 4the fact that it is easily confused with the entire brunneoincarnata/helveola/subincarnata complex, all of which are deadly.
Children and those with existing liver or kidney compromise are at extreme risk. Even a single small fruiting body consumed can deliver a potentially lethal amatoxin dose.
Toxin
Contains amatoxins - principally α-amanitin and β-amanitin - cyclic octapeptides that irreversibly inhibit RNA polymerase II.
Concentrations in Lepiota helveola are comparable to those in Lepiota brunneoincarnata and Amanita phalloides, sufficient to cause fatal liver failure from a single moderate-sized serving.
The toxins are:
- heat-stable
- water-soluble
- absorbed intact from the gastrointestinal tract
- subject to enterohepatic recirculation, which prolongs liver exposure
Symptoms
Classic amatoxin timeline:
- 1Latent period of 6-24 hours with no symptoms.
- 2Sudden severe cholera-like gastroenteritis (profuse watery diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, dehydration) lasting 12-72 hours.
- 3Apparent recovery ('false dawn') of 1-2 days during which liver damage is progressing silently.
- 4Acute hepatic and renal failure with jaundice, coagulopathy, encephalopathy, and highly elevated liver enzymes.
Death from fulminant hepatic failure can occur 5-10 days after ingestion if untreated.
Staying safe
Lepiota helveola is one of the most acutely dangerous mushrooms in the Mediterranean region. It contains amatoxins - cyclic peptides, chiefly α-amanitin - at concentrations comparable to those measured in Amanita phalloides (the Death Cap) and Lepiota brunneoincarnata.
Confirmed fatal poisonings attributed to L. helveola, or to the brunneoincarnata/helveola species pair (which historical sources sometimes conflated), have been recorded repeatedly in France, where this species is relatively well-known to mycologists precisely because of its danger.
Amatoxins act by irreversibly inhibiting RNA polymerase II, the enzyme responsible for transcribing the genetic code into messenger RNA. Once amatoxins bind to this enzyme, the cell cannot produce the proteins needed for its own repair and function.
The liver bears the brunt because hepatocytes are particularly active protein-synthesising cells and because the toxin undergoes enterohepatic recirculation - it is excreted into bile, reabsorbed from the intestine, and returns to the liver repeatedly, prolonging exposure.
The clinical course follows a treacherous pattern:
- 1Latent period of 6-24 hours during which the person feels completely well; this delay is itself dangerous because it discourages immediate medical attention.
- 2A gastrointestinal phase - profuse watery diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, dehydration - lasting 12-72 hours.
- 3An apparent improvement lasting 1-2 days; this 'false dawn' is the most lethal feature of amatoxin poisoning because it encourages the patient and clinicians to think the worst has passed.
- 4Overt hepatic and renal failure: jaundice, coagulopathy (inability to clot blood), encephalopathy, and rapidly rising transaminases.
Fulminant hepatic failure and death can occur 5-10 days after ingestion. At that stage, emergency liver transplantation may be the only life-saving option.
Amatoxins are heat-stable, water-soluble, and have no taste or smell. No method of preparation - cooking, parboiling, drying, pickling - reduces toxicity.
There is no specific antidote in the field. Hospital treatment consists of:
- aggressive fluid replacement
- repeated activated charcoal if started very early
- silibinin (milk thistle extract, which competitively inhibits hepatic uptake of amatoxins)
- N-acetylcysteine as a hepatoprotective agent
All of these must be started as early as possible to be effective.
If any ingestion of this or any similar small scaly Lepiota is suspected, call emergency services immediately. Do not wait for symptoms.
If possible, bring a photograph or a sample in a paper bag (not sealed plastic) so hospital toxicologists can confirm the species. State clearly that amatoxin poisoning is suspected so appropriate treatment can begin without delay.
Where & when it grows
Habitat
Terrestrial saprotroph of Mediterranean and warm-temperate grassland, disturbed ground, gardens, parks, olive groves, scrubland margins, and woodland edges.
Grows on organic-rich soils, singly or in small scattered groups.
Characteristic of the Mediterranean basin but found sporadically into southern and central France, Switzerland, and Italy's Po Valley.
When
Late spring to late autumn, May through November in the Mediterranean; peak September-October.
Flushes are triggered by rain after dry summer periods, particularly once air temperatures cool slightly in early autumn. In dry Mediterranean summers, early-autumn rain after the drought is the key trigger.
How it grows
Terrestrial, solitary or in small scattered groups on soil - it does not cluster in tight bunches or grow on wood.
As a saprotroph, it quietly breaks down buried plant debris and humus in the soil, living its life independent of tree roots.
That is part of what makes it comfortable in gardens and parks: it needs no particular tree partner, only organically rich ground.
Fruiting conditions
Mediterranean warm-season grassland saprotroph. In the characteristic hot-dry summer Mediterranean climate, the primary flush occurs when the first significant autumn rains break the summer drought, typically September-October, as soil temperatures drop below about 22 °C. Secondary flushes may follow spring rains in May-June in years with suitable moisture. Flush lag from rainfall to fruiting bodies is approximately 4-12 days.
Look-alikes
Lepiota helveola belongs to a complex of small, visually similar deadly dapperlings. The principal confusion species are other small Lepiota in the same size range and habitat:
- Lepiota brunneoincarnata (deadly dapperling) shares the small size, fragile ring, and free white gills, but typically has a more pinkish-brown to flesh-toned cap background rather than the warmer ochre-yellow of L. helveola, and is more associated with grassland and lawns; both are equally deadly.
- Lepiota subincarnata (fatal dapperling) is very similar in scale colour and habitat and is likewise deadly.
- Lepiota castanea (chestnut dapperling) has a chestnut-brown to dark rusty-brown scale colour on a white background rather than the honey-ochre tones of L. helveola; also deadly.
- Lepiota cristata (stinking dapperling) is smaller, has a sharper brighter reddish-brown central boss, and a strongly unpleasant radish smell; poisonous though perhaps less reliably lethal.
For foragers, the relevant rule is that the distinction between these species is irrelevant to safety: all small scaled Lepiota are dangerous and must never be eaten.
Young or unexpanded specimens of Macrolepiota procera (parasol mushroom, edible) might superficially resemble a small Lepiota before the cap expands. The parasol grows very large at maturity (cap 15-25+ cm), has a characteristic double-edged movable ring that slides on the stem, and a stem with distinctive zigzag snakeskin banding - features absent in all small Lepiota.
Never eat a small-capped Lepiota-type mushroom under 10 cm while waiting for it to 'grow into' something bigger.
Equally deadly. Has a whiter cap background overlaid with distinctly chestnut to dark rusty-brown scales, giving a colder, darker appearance than the warm ochre-honey tones of L. helveola. Both are woodland-edge to grassland-margin species and both are lethal - the colour difference alone is not a safe field character.
Also deadly with confirmed amatoxins. L. brunneoincarnata typically has a more pinkish-brown to flesh-toned cap background with coarser, more felty scales, and grows more characteristically in grassland, lawns, and gardens. L. helveola has a warmer honey-yellow to ochre background. The distinction is primarily academic for safety purposes - both are lethal and neither should be touched for consumption.
Equally deadly, with confirmed high amatoxin content. Has a pale pinkish-buff to ochre cap with reddish-brownish concentric scales; very similar to L. helveola. Microscopically distinct (different spore size and shape) but field separation is unreliable and irrelevant - both are lethal.
The fully grown parasol is an excellent edible but must only be picked when large (cap 15-25+ cm, with a fully expanded and recognisable double movable ring that slides on the stem, and a stem with unmistakable zigzag-snakeskin banding). Young unexpanded parasol buttons can look like any small scaly dapperling and must never be eaten at that stage. If a specimen is under 10 cm cap diameter, treat it as an unknown dangerous Lepiota regardless of any other feature.
Young button-stage Agaricus can appear as small pale scaly mushrooms in grassland or gardens. However, Agaricus species always develop pink (in youth) to chocolate-brown (at maturity) gills and produce a brown spore print, whereas L. helveola has permanently white gills and a white spore print. Checking gill colour - even on a young specimen - is the quickest distinguishing character.
Smaller (cap 1.5-4 cm), with a pronounced sharp reddish-brown central umbo, brighter rusty-orange scales toward the centre, and a very strong unpleasant radish-rubber smell that is more intense than in L. helveola. Poisonous and possibly contains low amatoxin levels; never edible. The strong smell is distinctive but not a reliable safety criterion.
