How to recognise it

Lanmaoa asiatica is a stocky, assertive mushroom built for the wet season.

Cap

The cap reaches 6-15 cm across, opening from a tightly domed cushion into a broad convex pillow. Its dry, finely velvety surface shifts from rusty brick-red to warm chestnut-brown, occasionally with orange or ochre tones near the margin.

Pores

Beneath the cap lies the defining feature of every jian shou qing: a dense, tightly packed pore surface that can range from vivid lemon-yellow in young specimens through orange-yellow to a deep blood-red in fully mature ones.

The pores are fine and circular, bruising rapidly to blue-green on any mechanical contact.

Stem

The stem is thick and club-shaped, typically 5-12 cm tall and 2-4 cm wide at the base, swelling to a bulbous heel. It is yellow above and often flushed red-brown below, with a fine red reticulation (network of ridges) visible under good light.

Flesh

Cut or break the flesh anywhere - cap, stem, or pore surface - and the cream-to-pale-yellow interior transitions to intense indigo blue within seconds.

This is not a staining reaction but an enzymatic oxidation: the colorless precursor gyrocyanin is rapidly converted by the enzyme gyrocyanase to an indigo-blue pigment when oxygen reaches cut tissue.

The bluing is irreversible and dramatic, a spectacle that has made jian shou qing one of the most visually distinctive fungi at any Yunnan market.

Why it's dangerous

Lanmaoa asiatica is not a deadly mushroom, but it causes a well-documented, sometimes severely distressing poisoning syndrome that sends more than a hundred people per year to hospital in Yunnan alone.

The danger is entirely a function of preparation:

  • raw or undercooked mushroom carries a real risk of hallucinogenic poisoning
  • properly cooked mushroom does not

The population at highest risk is people who intentionally undercook it out of curiosity about its reputation - a practice documented as increasing after viral social-media content.

The 12-24 hour onset delay is a practical hazard: it obscures the link between the meal and symptoms, especially for someone eating jian shou qing for the first time.

Risk is not zero even in a restaurant: inadequate cooking time, thick slices, or insufficient heat can leave pieces that appear done on the outside but retain active toxin at the centre.

Anyone who develops visual hallucinations or neurological symptoms within 24 hours of eating mushrooms in Yunnan should present to a medical facility immediately and bring any remaining specimen.

The condition is self-limiting and prognosis with supportive care is good, but the experience is severely frightening, and the onset delay means medical help should not be postponed.

Toxin

The compound responsible for jian shou qing hallucinations has not been identified as of the most recent published research (2025).

This is unusual and scientifically significant: the bluing boletes have been consumed in Yunnan for centuries, the poisoning syndrome is well-characterised clinically, and yet the causative molecule remains unknown.

Researchers at the University of Utah and the Natural History Museum of Utah (Colin Domnauer et al., November 2025) confirmed that the toxin is none of the known hallucinogens:

  • not psilocybin or its precursor psilocin - the hallucinogens from Psilocybe
  • not ibotenic acid or muscimol - the hallucinogens from Amanita muscaria
  • not gyrocyanin, the indigo pigment responsible for the bluing reaction

Gyrocyanin is pharmacologically inert; its presence is simply a visual marker of the enzymatic system, not the psychoactive agent.

The toxin appears to be heat-labile - destroyed or denatured by sufficient cooking - since thoroughly cooked mushrooms do not produce the syndrome.

It may be present across the jian shou qing species complex (Lanmaoa asiatica, Butyriboletus roseoflavus, Neoboletus magnificus) at varying concentrations, which could explain variation in case severity.

The toxin group is classified as 'unknown' in all current databases, and active phytochemical research is ongoing.

Symptoms

The syndrome produced by undercooked Lanmaoa asiatica is clinically distinctive and documented in a large case series from a single Yunnan hospital.

The hallmark symptom - reported by approximately 96% of affected patients in one hospital dataset - is 'lilliputian hallucinations': the perception of large numbers of small, brightly coloured figures, described by patients as little people or elves (小人人, xiao ren ren in Mandarin), who appear to march, dance, climb walls, or perform tasks in the patient's real-world visual field.

These are not recognised as unreal during the episode; patients are typically distressed.

Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, tachycardia, and generalised fatigue.

Symptom onset is characteristically delayed - 12 to 24 hours after ingestion - which means patients often go to sleep after the meal and wake during the night with hallucinations, disoriented. The delay also makes it easy for patients to fail to connect the symptoms to the mushroom they ate many hours earlier.

The hallucinations typically last several hours; the full syndrome resolves within 1-5 days with supportive care.

No deaths attributable solely to Lanmaoa asiatica poisoning are recorded in the published literature.

There is a folk belief in Yunnan that alcohol potentiates both the likelihood and severity of symptoms, which is why restaurants serving jian shou qing prohibit it.

Staying safe

The hazard with Lanmaoa asiatica is precisely defined and preparation-dependent: raw or insufficiently cooked mushroom causes hallucinations; thoroughly cooked mushroom is considered safe and eaten widely.

This makes the safety question essentially a question of kitchen practice rather than species avoidance.

Epidemiological data from Yunnan hospitals documents more than a hundred cases per year at a single facility, making jian shou qing one of the most common causes of mushroom poisoning in China.

The affected population is almost entirely people who ate the mushroom undercooked - cooking time cut short, pieces too thick to heat through, or alcohol consumed with the meal (believed to potentiate the toxin).

Yunnan public health authorities and specialist restaurants have settled on practical rules:

  • minimum 15-20 minutes at a rolling boil or sustained wok heat
  • no alcohol with the meal
  • some establishments keep a raw specimen aside for hospital reference if a diner later presents symptoms

The viral spread of jian shou qing content on Chinese social media (Xiaohongshu, Douyin) has both increased awareness and, paradoxically, increased deliberate undercooking by people curious about the hallucinogenic effect - a phenomenon public health messaging now specifically addresses.

Where & when it grows

Habitat

Lanmaoa asiatica is obligately ectomycorrhizal - it cannot complete its life cycle without a living tree root partner.

In Yunnan its primary host is Pinus yunnanensis, the Yunnan pine, a two-needled pine endemic to the plateau highlands between roughly 1,500 and 3,000 metres.

The fungal mycelium weaves a tight sheath around the pine's finest rootlets, forming the characteristic mantle of ectomycorrhiza; in exchange for sugars photosynthesized by the tree, the fungus provides water, phosphorus, and other soil minerals that the tree's own roots cannot reach efficiently.

The partnership is ancient - mycorrhizal symbioses of this kind predate modern tree lineages - and invisible above ground until the mycelium has accumulated enough carbon reserves to push up a fruitbody.

In Yunnan this means mixed pine and broadleaf forest on well-drained, acidic red soils at mid to high elevation, typically in areas that receive the full force of the Southwest Monsoon.

In the northern Philippines a morphologically similar blueing bolete known as sedesdem occupies an analogous ecological niche.

Because the partnership is host-specific and the pine itself requires particular soil chemistry, Lanmaoa asiatica does not turn up in degraded lowland habitat - it is a faithful indicator of intact, mature highland pine forest.

When

The fruiting of Lanmaoa asiatica is tightly synchronised with the arrival of the Southwest Asian Monsoon over Yunnan.

Seasonal rains typically begin in earnest in late June, and the first jian shou qing appear in July, reaching peak abundance through late July and August before tapering as the rains slacken in September. This window aligns with weeks 28-33 of the calendar year.

The trigger is not simply moisture alone: the mycelium has been alive underground throughout the dry winter and spring months, maintaining its partnership with the pine roots, accumulating resources.

When sustained soil saturation coincides with warm overnight temperatures - generally above 15°C at the elevations where the pine grows - the mycelium shifts from vegetative growth to reproductive mode and initiates primordia.

A single heavy rainstorm after a dry spell can produce a visible flush within 48-72 hours, fruitbodies swelling overnight from pinhead to full size.

Markets in Kunming and Dali reflect this rhythm precisely: supply is thin and prices are high in early July, the market floods in August, and by October the stalls shift to other species.

The monsoon itself is variable from year to year, and so is the harvest.

How it grows

Like all ectomycorrhizal boletes, Lanmaoa asiatica exists primarily as mycelium - a web of microscopic hyphae ramifying through the mineral soil and litter layer around Yunnan pine roots, sometimes extending many metres from a single tree.

This vegetative network is perennial, surviving multiple dry seasons in reduced metabolic activity before resuming growth when moisture returns.

Cultivation is impossible with current biotechnology: no laboratory substrate can replicate the living biochemical exchange between pine root and fungal mantle, and all attempts to grow mycorrhizal boletes axenically have failed to produce fruitbodies.

Lanmaoa asiatica was described formally to science only in 2014, following DNA sequencing of market specimens from Yunnan.

The taxonomy of the wider jian shou qing complex remains unsettled: the Chinese market name encompasses at least three or four genetically distinct species - including Butyriboletus roseoflavus and Neoboletus magnificus - morphologically similar enough to be sold interchangeably.

Phylogenetically, Lanmaoa asiatica belongs to the family Boletaceae and clusters with porcini-group boletes rather than with hallucinogenic species such as Psilocybe or Amanita, which makes its psychoactive activity scientifically unusual: the causative compound has no known chemical kinship to psilocybin, muscimol, or ibotenic acid.

Look-alikes

The 'jian shou qing' sold at Yunnan markets is not a single species but a complex of several closely related blueing boletes that are genuinely difficult to separate in the field or at the market stall.

The most common members are Butyriboletus roseoflavus and Neoboletus magnificus, both of which share the reddish-brown cap, yellow-to-red pore surface, and the vivid indigo bluing reaction.

From a safety standpoint this matters only in one direction: all of them require the same thorough cooking.

None of the jian shou qing group overlaps with deadly Amanita species in appearance - they lack a volva, an annulus (skirt), and white gills entirely (boletes have pores, not gills).

The principal confusion risk is with other blueing boletes in the region, some of which may have different toxin profiles; however, since the safe preparation method (thorough cooking) is identical for all of them, the relevant guidance is consistent regardless of exact species identity.

Outside the jian shou qing complex, the bluing reaction itself is a useful marker: non-blueing brown boletes do not carry this set of risks.

The one practical caution is to not substitute raw identification confidence for careful cooking - the species is sold by appearance and tradition, not by molecular test, and the consequences of undercooking are well-documented.
