How to recognise it

Inosperma erubescens (the deadly fibrecap) belongs to the Inocybe alliance, a large group of woodland mushrooms characterised by a cap surface that tears or splits into radial fibres as it expands.

The cap starts conical or bell-shaped, 3-8 cm across, opening to broadly umbonate with age. Colour runs from pale straw or ivory through buff and ochre-brown, and often flushes pinkish-red or brick-red toward the margin - the epithet erubescens means 'blushing'.

The surface is silky-fibrous in youth, becoming coarsely cracked with age. Gills are pale grey-brown, crowded.

The stem is 4-8 cm tall, firm, pale buff with a slight bulbous base; it may flush the same reddish tone as the cap.

The smell is earthy and spermatic - reliably setting the Inocybe genus apart from edible mushrooms it resembles. No ring, no volva.

Clitocybe rivulosa and C. dealbata (ivory funnel / fool's funnel) are small white to buff grassland funnels, 2-5 cm across, with crowded white decurrent gills and a cap that in fresh specimens may carry faint concentric watermark zones - the 'rivulets' of the former name. Cap and stem are white to watery-buff with at most a faint floury smell.

Why it's dangerous

Inosperma erubescens and the white Clitocybe funnels (C. rivulosa, C. dealbata) are deadly-classified species. Fatalities have been documented across Europe, particularly involving children, elderly individuals, and cases where medical care was delayed.

There is no safe dose and no safe preparation.

The white Clitocybe funnels present the highest grassland foraging risk in central and western Europe: they grow in the same fairy rings as the edible Marasmius oreades in parks, lawns, and roadside verges - exactly where inexperienced foragers and children stop to pick.

I. erubescens presents a parallel woodland risk in beech and mixed forest.

If there is any possibility that either species has been consumed, do not wait for symptoms: go immediately to an emergency department and state that muscarine poisoning from wild mushrooms is suspected.

Atropine is the antidote and must be administered by medical staff; the dose is titrated by clinical response and cannot be safely self-administered.

Toxin

The principal toxin in both Inosperma erubescens and the white Clitocybe funnels is muscarine (L-muscarine), a quaternary ammonium alkaloid that acts as a potent agonist at muscarinic acetylcholine receptors.

Muscarine is not degraded by cooking, drying, or acidic preservation, and it does not require liver activation before reaching target tissues - it acts directly on peripheral muscarinic receptors (M1-M3) throughout the body.

  • M2 receptors in the heart slow cardiac conduction.
  • M3 receptors in smooth muscle and exocrine glands produce the secretory and gastrointestinal effects that define the clinical picture.

The Inosperma/Inocybe genus is among the highest natural muscarine sources known; concentrations in I. erubescens can reach several milligrams per gram of dry weight, making even a small fruitbody a clinically significant dose.

The white Clitocybe funnels also contain muscarine, though their profile has been less thoroughly quantified.

Neither species contains amatoxins; the poisoning mechanism is purely cholinergic, not hepatotoxic.

Symptoms

Muscarine poisoning sets in typically 15-30 minutes after ingestion, occasionally within 10 minutes.

The clinical picture is the SLUDGE syndrome: Salivation, Lacrimation, Urination, Defaecation, GI distress, Emesis - together with bradycardia, bronchospasm, miosis (pupil constriction), and diaphoresis.

In severe cases:

  • respiratory difficulty develops from bronchospasm and increased secretions
  • heart rate may fall to dangerous levels
  • vision becomes blurred

The rapid onset, unlike the 6-24 hour delay of amatoxin poisoning, reliably prompts emergency presentation - which is medically important because early atropine administration gives the best outcomes.

In children, elderly patients, or those with pre-existing cardiac or respiratory conditions, these effects can be life-threatening without treatment.

With prompt hospital care - atropine titrated to dry secretions, supportive cardiovascular management - outcomes are generally good in otherwise healthy adults, with full recovery typically within 24 hours.

Staying safe

Both Inosperma erubescens and the white Clitocybe funnels (C. rivulosa, C. dealbata) are deadly and must never be eaten.

Muscarine poisoning causes rapid-onset cholinergic crisis, onset 15-30 minutes, with:

  • drenching sweating
  • copious salivation
  • watering eyes
  • abdominal cramps
  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • bradycardia
  • constricted pupils
  • bronchospasm

Death in healthy adults is uncommon with prompt medical treatment, but in the elderly, children, or those with cardiac or respiratory conditions the risk is higher.

The antidote is atropine, most effective when given early.

If you or anyone with you has eaten either species, go immediately to an emergency department - do not wait for symptoms - and tell medical staff you may have ingested a muscarine-bearing mushroom.

Field recognition:

  • I. erubescens: radially fibrous reddening cap, spermatic smell, no ring, no volva, woodland.
  • White Clitocybe funnels: small white funnel cap with crowded decurrent gills, grassland, often in fairy rings.

Where & when it grows

Habitat

Inosperma erubescens is a mycorrhizal species: its mycelium is interwoven, cell by cell, with the fine root tips of living trees in an exchange that has persisted in these forests far longer than any individual trunk above ground - the fungus supplying water and mineral nutrients from the soil matrix, the tree returning photosynthetic carbon.

I. erubescens associates primarily with beech (Fagus sylvatica) and a range of other deciduous and coniferous trees, fruiting on the woodland floor on neutral to slightly calcareous soils, often at forest edges and along rides where some light reaches the ground.

The white Clitocybe funnels (C. rivulosa, C. dealbata) inhabit an entirely different niche: saprotrophic, decomposing dead organic matter in short open grassland - lawns, roadside verges, parkland, and path margins.

They fruit in arcs or full fairy rings in exactly the same turf as the edible fairy ring champignon (Marasmius oreades), which is the root of the confusion.

These two dangerous species therefore present two distinct hazards: a woodland fibrecap that can be mistaken for edible summer mushrooms among the trees, and a grassland funnel that colonises the open, approachable places where families and inexperienced foragers are most likely to pick.

When

Both Inosperma erubescens and the white Clitocybe funnels are summer-to-autumn fruiters, appearing from June onward and persisting through October.

I. erubescens tends to fruit earliest of the group, sometimes appearing in late May or early June when beech and mixed woodland soils have warmed sufficiently - it is among the earlier summer agarics in central and western Europe.

The ivory funnel follows a broadly similar season but is tied less to soil temperature under canopy and more to the moisture-retention cycle of open turf, making it responsive to summer thunderstorm events that briefly saturate lawns and verges.

Neither species is restricted to any single month: warm, wet summers can produce flushes from early June right through to the first hard frosts of October or November.

Fruitbodies of the white Clitocybe are short-lived, collapsing quickly in dry conditions, while I. erubescens is somewhat more persistent but still benefits from rain in the preceding two weeks.

The broadest danger window for confusion runs from July through September, when Marasmius oreades and Agaricus campestris are actively fruiting in the same grasslands, and when beech woodland is rich with other summer species.

How it grows

Inosperma erubescens emerges from mycorrhizal mycelium that may have occupied the same root zone for decades, dormant and invisible through drought and frost, waiting for the convergence of warmth and moisture that triggers fruitbody initiation.

Once conditions align, a pin can develop and expand to a mature fruitbody in as little as 24-48 hours.

Fruitbodies appear singly or in small scattered groups of two or three; this pattern is characteristic of mycorrhizal agarics, each fruitbody serviced by its own hyphal connection back to a tree partner.

The white Clitocybe funnels grow differently: being saprotrophic, their mycelium radiates outward through the upper turf layer, digesting dead organic matter, and produces fruitbodies at the active hyphal front in the arcs and rings so familiar from lawns and verges.

As the mycelium exhausts nutrients near the centre and expands into fresh turf at the perimeter, the ring grows by a few centimetres to metres per season, sometimes persisting and enlarging in the same lawn for decades.

It is at the active front - where fruitbodies of the dangerous Clitocybe appear alongside those of Marasmius oreades - that the confusion risk is highest.

Look-alikes

The white Clitocybe funnels are most often confused with the fairy ring champignon (Marasmius oreades) in the same grassland rings.

The distinctions are reliable:

  • M. oreades has widely spaced pale buff gills that do not run down the stem, a tough wiry hollow stem, and a sweet biscuity smell.
  • The dangerous Clitocybe has crowded white decurrent gills, a fragile stem, and at most a faint floury smell.

A secondary grassland confusion species is the miller (Clitopilus prunulus), a larger white funnel with strongly mealy smell - itself edible but similar in shape.

In woodland, Inosperma erubescens is most often confused with St George's mushroom (Calocybe gambosa), field mushrooms (Agaricus), and the gypsy mushroom (Cortinarius caperatus).

  • Against St George's: I. erubescens has a radially fibrous cracked cap and spermatic smell; St George's cap is smooth to floury, never fibrous-cracked, with a strongly mealy smell.
  • Against field mushrooms: Agaricus gills begin distinctly pink and darken to chocolate-brown with spore maturity; I. erubescens gills remain brownish-grey throughout.
  • Against the gypsy mushroom: Cortinarius caperatus has a wrinkled-radiate ochre cap, a cortina remnant on the stem, and rust-brown spores.

The spermatic smell of Inocybe is the fastest single exclusion character once learned.
