Galerina sulcicepsToxic - and the most serious cases can be fatal. Never eat it, and wash your hands after handling.
Never eat a mushroom you are not 100% sure of - check the look-alikes below, and always cook wild mushrooms.
How to recognise it
A small, nondescript brown mushroom that looks entirely at home among the leaf litter and rotting timber of a tropical forest floor - which is precisely what makes it dangerous.
Cap
The cap is 1-3 cm across and hygrophanous: deep tawny-brown when freshly wetted by rain, fading to pale ochre from the centre outward as it dries - sometimes two-toned in the same cap.
When moist, the margin is distinctly furrowed (sulcate), a feature captured in the species name sulciceps; this ribbing softens and disappears as the cap dries. The surface is smooth and barely viscid in wet weather.
Gills
Gills run from rust-ochre when young to full rust-brown at maturity, moderately crowded.
The spore print is rust-brown - the single most reliable field character distinguishing any Galerina from the edible wood-growing species it resembles.
Stem
The stem is slender, 3-6 cm tall and 2-4 mm wide, carrying a pale, membranous ring zone that is fragile and often gone entirely by the time you find it.
Flesh
Flesh thin, pale brown, without notable smell.
Why it's dangerous
Galerina sulciceps is one of the most dangerous wild mushrooms in Southeast Asia. It occurs in a region with strong traditions of wild mushroom foraging and consumption, and it is morphologically indistinguishable without spore-print examination from several edible wood-growing species.
Mass poisoning events have been documented in Java, Indonesia, where the species was unintentionally mixed into communal food.
There is no antidote for amatoxin poisoning; treatment is supportive:
- gastric lavage
- N-acetylcysteine
- silibinin infusion
- dialysis
- potentially liver transplantation in severe cases
Outcome depends almost entirely on the dose ingested and the speed of medical intervention.
Toxin
Alpha-amanitin and beta-amanitin (amatoxins), the same compounds found in Amanita phalloides and Lepiota brunneoincarnata.
Amatoxins are:
- heat-stable and water-soluble
- not destroyed by drying, cooking, or processing
A lethal dose for an adult human is estimated at 0.1 mg/kg body weight of alpha-amanitin. A single fruitbody of Galerina sulciceps can contain a sufficient amount to be fatal.
Symptoms
Amatoxin poisoning follows a characteristic triphasic course.
- 1Phase 1 (6-24 hours after ingestion): severe gastroenteritis - nausea, vomiting, profuse watery diarrhoea, abdominal cramps.
- 2Phase 2 (24-72 hours): apparent clinical improvement, during which amatoxins are binding to RNA polymerase II inside hepatocytes and renal tubule cells.
- 3Phase 3 (72-96 hours): fulminant hepatic and renal failure, coagulopathy, encephalopathy, and death without supportive care.
The diagnostic latent period of more than 6 hours between ingestion and first symptoms is the key clinical indicator distinguishing amatoxin poisoning from common gastroenteritis.
Staying safe
Identification rule: any small brown gilled mushroom growing on wood in tropical Southeast Asia must be treated with extreme caution.
The rust-brown spore print is the critical safety test - all Galerina produce it, all the safe lookalikes (Armillaria, Kuehneromyces, Flammulina) do not.
Even expert mycologists treat this species group as high-hazard in the field.
Do not eat any specimen that cannot be verified to species level by someone with direct microscopic experience of the relevant flora.
Where & when it grows
Habitat
Humid tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia, growing saprotrophically on rotting hardwood logs, stumps, and buried woody debris.
Particularly documented from Java (Indonesia), Borneo, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka, at elevations from sea level to ~1500 m.
Prefers shaded, moist conditions under closed forest canopy.
When
Wet season opportunist - fruits whenever the substrate is saturated, broadly April to November, with peaks aligned to monsoon flush periods.
Unlike temperate relatives it is not strictly autumnal.
How it grows
Solitary to gregarious on decaying wood, sometimes in small clusters of 2-5 fruitbodies.
Flushes appear rapidly after extended rain (5-10 days lag from soaking rainfall) and are short-lived (2-5 days before the caps begin to dry and shrivel).
Fruiting conditions
Tropical wood-decay saprotroph; flushes follow sustained monsoon rainfall on saturated rotting logs. No cold-temperature requirement - the limiting factor is substrate moisture rather than seasonality.
Look-alikes
The primary confusion hazard in its range is with small edible wood-growing species:
- Kuehneromyces mutabilis (sheathed woodtuft / velvet shank relatives) and small Flammulina species also grow on wood with brownish caps, but they yield white to cream spore prints rather than the rust-brown print of Galerina.
- Small honey fungus fruitbodies (Armillaria spp.) also grow on wood but have white spore prints, thicker flesh, and a more robust ring.
In tropical markets the species has been confused with small edible brown mushrooms sold for culinary use.
The rust-brown spore print is the single safest field distinction: if you press gills to white paper and see any trace of rust or cinnamon colour, do not eat the mushroom.
The closest relative and equally deadly - both contain amatoxins and share the rust-brown spore print, hygrophanous cap, and wood-substrate growth habit. G. marginata is the dominant amatoxin-bearing Galerina across Europe and temperate North America; G. sulciceps is its ecological counterpart in the tropical Indomalayan zone. For practical safety purposes they are equivalent threats: neither should ever be consumed.
Also clusters on decaying wood, with brownish caps and a ring. White spore print (Galerina has rust-brown) and generally more robust fruitbodies with a cottony to scaly stem base. Armillaria honey-coloured caps tend to be somewhat larger and more sticky-viscid.
Edible wood-growing species with a similar hygrophanous brown cap. Distinguished by its white to cream spore print (not rust-brown) and its distinctly scaly lower stem below the ring. Any rust or cinnamon tinge in the spore print rules out Kuehneromyces and rules in Galerina.
Wood-rotting species with orange-brown to tawny caps and a velvety dark-brown stem. Spore print is white, not rust-brown. Stem notably velutinous (hairy) below and lacks a ring.
