How to recognise it

The Polished Pinkgill is a graceful, medium-sized Entoloma that stands out within the genus for the silky sheen of its cap - a feature captured in the Latin epithet 'politum' (polished).

Cap

Fresh caps measure 3-8 cm and open from broadly conical to shallowly umbonate or broadly flat.

Their colour shifts dramatically with moisture, ranging from dark umber-brown when wet to pale buff-grey when dry - often showing both extremes at once as the cap dries outward from the centre, a two-toned look that is surprisingly striking in the field.

The surface is smooth and silky-fibrous, catching the low light of wetland shade in a way that sets it apart from its duller relatives.

Gills

The gills begin cream and gradually assume the salmon-pink blush of maturing spores - a diagnostic feature shared by all pinkgills.

Stem

The stem is slender and fibrous, with a faint silky stripe pattern and occasionally a delicate lilac tinge at the apex.

Smell & taste

Most importantly, fresh specimens have a pronounced mealy or nitrous smell - described as farinaceous, cucumber-like or radish-like - which is both distinctive and a reliable confirmation character alongside the pink spore print.

Why it's dangerous

The intrinsic danger of Entoloma politum is moderate - the expected outcome of a typical ingestion is unpleasant but self-limited gastrointestinal illness rather than life-threatening organ damage.

The broader danger of the genus is the taxonomic complexity: many Entoloma species are visually indistinguishable in the field even for experienced foragers, and the genus as a whole is responsible for a significant proportion of mushroom poisoning cases in Europe.

No species in the genus should be eaten without specialist-level certainty.

In the Nordic region, wetland pinkgills are encountered regularly by foragers targeting other species such as Camarophyllopsis or damp-meadow waxcaps, and accidental collection is the main risk.

Toxin

The specific toxin fraction of Entoloma politum has not been isolated and characterised in the scientific literature with the same precision as, for example, amatoxins or orellanin.

The genus Entoloma broadly contains an array of poorly understood irritant compounds that act on the gastrointestinal mucosa. In some Entoloma species, choline esters and other nitrogen-containing compounds have been implicated.

The effect is a relatively short-latency GI irritant syndrome rather than any delayed organ toxicity.

Symptoms

Poisoning by Entoloma politum produces a classic short-latency gastrointestinal irritant syndrome: nausea and abdominal cramps typically begin within 30 minutes to 3 hours after ingestion, followed by vomiting and watery diarrhoea.

Symptoms are generally self-limiting, resolving within 24 hours in most cases.

Significant dehydration may occur with prolonged vomiting and diarrhoea, particularly in children and the elderly, and medical attention should be sought if symptoms are severe or prolonged.

There is no known delayed phase of organ toxicity (no hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity or neurotoxicity) specifically documented for this species.

Staying safe

Entoloma politum is poisonous and must not be eaten.

It causes the gastrointestinal syndrome common to the genus: nausea, vomiting, cramps and diarrhoea, with onset typically within 30 minutes to 3 hours of ingestion.

Because the genus is taxonomically challenging and many species are visually similar, any mushroom identified as an Entoloma should be treated as inedible unless the collector has specialist expertise.

The key safety rule: if the spore print is pink and the habitat is wetland grassland or riparian ground, treat the find as toxic and do not taste it.

Where & when it grows

Habitat

This species is a saprotrophic decomposer of organic-rich damp soils, with a strong affinity for wet habitats:

  • streamside floodplain
  • willow-alder carr
  • boggy meadows
  • fen margins
  • moist moss-rich permanent grassland

In Scandinavia it is a characteristic species of lowland to boreal wet meadow communities, often growing alongside hygrophilous plants such as sedges, meadowsweet and marsh marigold.

It is not a forest fungus in the usual sense, and finding it on dry, upland or heavily managed ground is unusual.

The wetland association is a helpful field clue - if you are on dry ground, reconsider the identification.

When

Entoloma politum fruits primarily in mid-summer through early autumn, from July to October in the Nordic region, with peak abundance through August and early September.

It is sensitive to soil moisture and tends to produce fruitbodies in discrete flushes after summer rain when soils remain warm.

It rarely persists into late autumn: once nights cool significantly below 5 °C the fruiting rapidly tails off.

How it grows

Entoloma politum is saprotrophic, quietly breaking down accumulated organic matter in richly humic, moist soils. It grows singly or in small scattered groups rather than in large gregarious troops or fairy rings.

Beneath the surface the mycelium persists year after year, invisible until conditions are right - return to the same damp streamside or boggy meadow in a warm, wet August and you are likely to find it again.

No parasitic or mycorrhizal phase is known.

Fruiting conditions

A warm-season fruiter in moist soils; flushes follow summer and early-autumn rain when soil temperatures are still above 8 °C. Fruiting ceases as nights cool below 5 °C.

Look-alikes

Entoloma politum belongs to a large, taxonomically complex genus and can be confused with numerous congeners as well as with species in other families.

The salmon-pink spore print is the single most important character separating all Entoloma species from edible lookalikes.

Within the genus, the distinctive mealy-nitrous smell, hygrophanous grey-brown cap, and moist-grassland/wetland habitat together allow separation from most other pinkgills.

Key confusions:

  • Entoloma nidorosum - the polished silky cap is reminiscent of it; equally toxic, more woodland-dwelling, stronger nitrous smell.
  • E. jubatum - darker, more fibrillose.
  • Small Agrocybe species - share damp grassland habitats but have rusty-brown spore prints and ring-like remnants.
  • Naucoria species - in willowherb- and alder-associated habitats, with rusty-brown prints.

Any small grey-brown mushroom in a damp meadow with a pink print should be treated as Entoloma and therefore as toxic.

Common Naucoria

Associated with Alnus in riparian habitats and therefore shares the streamside setting; cap is tawny-brown to honey-coloured, gills are rusty-cinnamon brown (not pink), and the spore print is rusty-brown. The pink vs. rusty-brown spore print is the decisive separator.

Livid Pinkgill

A larger, more robust Entoloma of woodland and woodland margins (not wetland), with a paler ivory-grey cap and a strongly sinuate gill attachment. Equally or more toxic - causes severe prolonged GI illness. Shared pink spore print confirms Entoloma identity and danger for both.

Nitrous Pinkgill

Very similar to E. politum in size, colour and mealy smell but typically woodland rather than wetland, with an even stronger nitrous-alkaline odour. Equally toxic; the habitat difference is the primary field separator.

Ringed Fieldcap

Can occur in damp meadow habitats; has a pale buff-brown hygrophanous cap superficially similar when dry. However, the spore print is rusty-brown (not pink), there is a membranous ring on the stem, and the smell is more strongly mealy-sweet. Not poisonous in the same way, but not a recommended edible.

Sepia Pinkgill

Darker sepia-brown, more fibrillose cap surface, less silky appearance; typically in heathland or moorland rather than wetland. Toxic. Pink spore print links it to the genus.
