How to recognise it

Cortinarius punctatisporus is a medium-sized, ochre-brown to tawny webcap whose most important distinguishing character is microscopic: the spore surface is densely covered with fine punctate warts (dots), visible only under high magnification, that give rise to the species name.

In the field it presents the classic Cortinarius gestalt - rusty-brown spore print, cobwebby cortina on young specimens, and a fibrillose ochre-tawny cap and stem.

Cap

Broadly convex to nearly flat, warm honey-brown to russet, and may appear slightly silky-streaked when dry.

Gills

Begin pale clay-brown and reliably darken to rust-cinnamon as spores mature, a hallmark of the entire Cortinarius genus.

Stem

Retains the rust-brown cortinal remnant as a faint irregular zone below mid-stem level.

Flesh

Whitish-buff, lacking distinctive taste or strong odour.

Without microscopic examination of spore ornamentation, confident species-level identification is not achievable, and - critically - no level of field identification confidence makes any South American webcap safe to eat.

Where & when it grows

Habitat

This species is strictly ectomycorrhizal with Nothofagus (southern beech), the dominant native tree of cool-temperate and montane South American forests.

Its primary range is the Andean and Patagonian Nothofagus zone in Argentina and Chile, where it colonises the acidic, humus-rich forest soils beneath dense leaf litter.

It shares this habitat with other Cortinarius species, some of which are confirmed or suspected to carry orellanin nephrotoxins.

The Nothofagus forest floor supports a rich mycorrhizal community, and numerous Cortinarius species fruit simultaneously through the autumn months. A forager encountering this habitat should understand that visual separation of species is genuinely unreliable at the genus level, let alone the species level.

When

Fruiting occurs in Southern Hemisphere late summer through autumn, generally February to May, with the practical peak in March and April.

The triggering mechanism follows the standard pattern for cool-adapted ectomycorrhizal Cortinarius species:

  • Soil temperatures falling through the 8-15 °C range following summer
  • Sustained autumn rainfall delivering at least 20-30 mm over a two-week window

At high Andean elevations where frosts begin early, the fruiting window may be compressed to just a few weeks in March. At lower montane sites with a milder autumn, fruiting can continue through May.

The species does not fruit in midsummer or winter.

How it grows

As an obligate ectomycorrhizal fungus, Cortinarius punctatisporus cannot complete its life cycle without a living Nothofagus host.

The visible mushroom is the reproductive structure of a perennial underground mycelial network that may persist and expand for many years beneath the same trees, reappearing in the same locations across successive autumn seasons.

Fruit bodies emerge singly or in small loosely scattered groups from the mycelium, typically one to five at a site. Dense fairy rings or large gregarious clusters are not a feature of this species.

The underground mycelium plays an important ecological role in forest nutrient cycling, particularly phosphorus and water transfer between tree roots and the soil matrix.

Fruiting conditions

Southern Hemisphere late-summer to autumn species in Nothofagus forest. Fruiting triggered by post-summer cooling (soil temperatures falling below approximately 15 °C) combined with sustained autumn rainfall (20+ mm over 14 days). Typical flush lag 10-21 days after the triggering rain event. Peak March-April; may extend to May at lower montane elevations.

Handle with care

Toxin

No specific toxin has been analytically confirmed in Cortinarius punctatisporus itself. The species is classified as inedible rather than toxic on this basis.

However, this classification must not be read as a safety clearance.

The Cortinarius genus contains numerous orellanin-bearing species - a polypyridine N-oxide nephrotoxin that causes insidious, delayed, and potentially fatal kidney failure - and several such species occur in the same Nothofagus forest habitat as C. punctatisporus.

The toxicological profile of the vast majority of South American Cortinarius species has not been studied, and chemical resemblance between webcaps makes it impossible to predict which species carry orellanin and which do not based on appearance alone.

The absence of confirmed toxicity data for C. punctatisporus is a data gap, not a safety finding.

Symptoms

No poisoning cases attributed specifically to Cortinarius punctatisporus are documented.

For reference and as a precautionary framework: orellanin nephrotoxicity, the principal risk in this genus, is characterised by a severely delayed onset of 2-3 weeks (range: days to over a month) after ingestion, during which renal tubular necrosis progresses silently.

When symptoms emerge they include:

  • Intense thirst
  • Altered urination (initially increased, later decreased)
  • Severe fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Lower back pain
  • Ultimately, signs of acute or chronic kidney failure

If any webcap-genus mushroom has been consumed, seek emergency medical evaluation without waiting for symptoms - and report all mushroom meals eaten in the preceding four weeks.

Look-alikes

Several Cortinarius species occur alongside C. punctatisporus in South American Nothofagus forests and share its ochre-tawny to russet coloration, rust-brown spore print, and cobwebby cortina.

Among these, Cortinarius orellanoides and related orellanin-bearing webcaps are the most dangerous confusion: they can be visually indistinguishable from C. punctatisporus in the field and are capable of causing fatal kidney failure.

The specific epithet of C. punctatisporus refers only to spore surface ornamentation visible at high microscopic magnification - a character with no practical field-separation value.

Other similar species include various undescribed or provisionally named South American Cortinarius taxa in Nothofagus forest, none of which have been fully characterised toxicologically.

Outside the genus:

  • Gymnopilus species may resemble webcaps (rusty-orange spores, cobwebby veil) but tend toward yellower, more bitter-tasting flesh.
  • Pholiota species are typically scaly and grow on wood.

These non-Cortinarius alternatives can be excluded by habitat, substrate, and closer examination, but the Cortinarius-to-Cortinarius confusion problem remains genuinely unsolvable in the field.

Why it matters

DO NOT EAT. Cortinarius punctatisporus is classified as inedible, and no population should consume it experimentally.

The genus Cortinarius in South American Nothofagus forests includes species with confirmed orellanin content, and the toxicological status of most species - including C. punctatisporus - has not been characterised.

No field identification method distinguishes safe from toxic webcaps reliably. Additionally, the mixed community of webcaps fruiting in the same habitat includes species that are deadly, increasing the risk of misidentification at the point of collection.

The precautionary principle mandates treating every webcap collected in Nothofagus forest as potentially deadly until expert laboratory analysis proves otherwise - a standard that cannot be met in a foraging context.

Orellanin webcap groupdeadly

Multiple South American Cortinarius species in Nothofagus forest carry confirmed or suspected orellanin nephrotoxin and can present with similar ochre-tawny to russet coloration, rust-brown spore print, and cobwebby cortina. Field separation from C. punctatisporus is not reliably achievable; species-level identification requires microscopy and chemical analysis. All such webcaps must be treated as potentially deadly.

South American tawny webcaps (general)deadly

A diverse and incompletely described community of Cortinarius species fruits in South American Nothofagus forest, many sharing the ochre to tawny coloration and rust-brown spore print of C. punctatisporus. The toxicological profiles of most have not been studied. Given the presence of confirmed orellanin-bearing species in the same habitat, all co-occurring webcaps must be assumed to carry equivalent risk. No field character reliably separates safe from deadly.

Cinnamon webcap

A yellow-olive to cinnamon-yellow webcap of conifer and mixed forests more typical of the Northern Hemisphere, sometimes recorded in introduced plantations. Smaller and more yellowy than C. punctatisporus; not confirmed deadly, but still a Cortinarius to be avoided. Its occurrence in natural South American Nothofagus habitat is not established. If encountered, the same general webcap precautions apply.

Spectacular rustgill

Also bears a rusty-orange spore print and may have a cortina-like partial veil, but Gymnopilus grows on decaying wood or at the base of trees (lignicolous), not from soil; the cap and gills are more vividly yellow-orange to golden-tawny, and the taste is intensely bitter. Gymnopilus contains psilocybin in some species and is itself not edible, but it does not carry orellanin risk. Substrate (wood vs. soil) is the single most reliable separator.

In the kitchen

Picking & cleaning

Do not collect Cortinarius punctatisporus or any ochre-tawny webcap from Nothofagus forest for food.

For scientific purposes:

  • Handle with disposable gloves and store specimens separately from any edible species to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Document the habitat, host tree species, and microhabitat carefully, as these data are scientifically valuable in the poorly studied South American Cortinarius flora.

Photography in situ is always preferable to collection.

Cooking

There is no cooking method that reliably makes any Cortinarius species safe to eat.

Orellanin - the toxin class present in deadly South American webcaps that may co-occur with or be confused for C. punctatisporus - is fully heat-stable and is not deactivated by boiling, frying, roasting, drying, pickling, or any other culinary process.

Even if C. punctatisporus itself lacks confirmed toxicity, its culinary use is not warranted given:

  • The impossibility of reliable identification
  • The presence of deadly lookalikes in the same habitat
  • The untested chemical profile of the species

Good to know

DO NOT EAT. No Cortinarius species from South American Nothofagus forests should be collected for food, and Cortinarius punctatisporus is no exception.

Its inedibility classification reflects the absence of confirmed toxin data, not the presence of confirmed safety data.

In this genus and habitat, the burden of proof runs in one direction only: a webcap must be proven safe by expert chemical analysis before consumption, not assumed safe because poisoning data are lacking.
