Guan Yu Bolete
Caloboletus guanyuiEdible only with the right preparation - or safe for some people but not others. Learn the caveats first.

How to recognise it
Caloboletus guanyui is a robust, medium to large bolete that follows the characteristic plan of its genus: the combination of a dull olive-brown cap, vivid lemon-yellow pores, and a reddish reticulate stem, all betrayed on cutting by an instant, dramatic blue.
Cap
The cap opens as a tight hemisphere and expands to a broad, comfortable cushion, its dry, finely feltlike surface coloured in subdued olive-browns and greyish-browns - nothing in the cap shouts for attention.
Gills / Pores
The pore surface is another matter entirely: in young fruit bodies the pores are a vivid, almost sulphurous lemon-yellow. Even without touching them, you can register the contrast with the dull brown cap above.
As the mushroom ages, the pores shift toward olive-yellow and then olive.
Flesh
Touch the pores - or slice the stipe - and the tissue turns a deep, saturated blue within seconds.
This instantaneous bluing runs through all parts of the fruit body: cap flesh, tube layer, and stipe flesh all respond with the same speed and depth of colour.
Stem
The stipe adds the third diagnostic tier: its ground colour is pale yellow at the apex but grades through orange-yellow to dull red in the lower half, and the entire surface is overlaid by a coarse, raised network.
Smell & taste
Taste a small shred of raw cap flesh and spit it out immediately - the intense, persistent bitterness is the clearest identification signal this species carries.
Why it's dangerous
Direct danger from C. guanyui itself is moderate - the GI irritation is real but not life-threatening in normal circumstances.
The severe danger is the identification challenge. In subtropical southeastern China, blue-staining boletes with reddish-stemmed, yellow-pored morphology include species that have killed people (the jian shou qing / Neoboletus venenatus complex).
There is no reliable way for a non-expert to distinguish Caloboletus guanyui from those deadly species in the field solely by sight.
Any blue-staining bolete collected in these forests must be considered potentially deadly until identified with certainty by an experienced mycologist or a trusted local expert who knows the specific regional toxic species.
Toxin
The toxic principle belongs to the bitter sesquiterpene class, the same group implicated in Caloboletus calopus (bitter beech bolete) of Europe.
These compounds are non-volatile and heat-stable; cooking does not eliminate them.
The specific molecules in C. guanyui have not been fully characterised in the primary mycological literature, but the genus-level pattern is well established.
There is no evidence of amatoxins, orellanin, gyromitrin, or other systemic toxins.
Symptoms
Gastrointestinal irritation, typically beginning within 30 minutes to 3 hours of ingestion:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal cramps
- Diarrhoea
The extreme bitterness of raw or cooked material usually deters consumption of large quantities, limiting severity.
Symptoms are expected to be self-limiting with supportive care (fluids, rest).
Seek medical attention promptly if symptoms develop or if there is any uncertainty about which species was consumed, as the co-occurring deadly jian shou qing boletes require emergency treatment.
Staying safe
Caloboletus guanyui is toxic and causes gastrointestinal distress. The bitter sesquiterpene compounds that give Caloboletus species their extreme bitterness are gastrointestinal irritants and are not destroyed by cooking.
Ingestion of significant amounts may cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhoea; symptoms typically begin within 30 minutes to 3 hours of consumption.
This species is not known to be lethally toxic, and recovery is expected with supportive care; if symptoms develop, seek medical advice promptly.
The indirect danger is greater than the direct toxicity. In the subtropical forests of southeastern China, Caloboletus guanyui co-occurs with multiple species of the deadly jian shou qing complex (Neoboletus venenatus and relatives), which cause severe neurological and life-threatening poisoning.
An inexperienced forager who mistakes any blue-staining bolete in these forests for an edible species runs the risk of consuming one of the deadliest mushrooms in Asia.
Never eat any blue-staining bolete from subtropical Chinese forests without expert identification.
If Caloboletus guanyui is accidentally consumed and any symptoms beyond the expected bitterness develop, treat as a potential jian shou qing poisoning and seek emergency care immediately.
Where & when it grows
Habitat
Caloboletus guanyui is an ectomycorrhizal species, spending most of its existence as invisible mycelium threaded through the soil in intimate partnership with the root tips of its Fagaceous host trees.
In the humid subtropical forests of southeastern China - Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, and likely into the Yunnan-Vietnam borderlands - its hosts are:
- Subtropical oaks (Quercus acutissima, Q. variabilis)
- Chinquapins (Castanopsis)
- Stone oaks (Lithocarpus)
- Related broadleaved species
These forests have a layered architecture, often on well-drained slopes, with deep accumulations of broadleaf litter that buffer soil moisture and provide the humus-rich substrate the mycelium prefers.
Because the partnership with a living host is non-negotiable, this species is absent from logged-out, degraded, or plantation stands. It is a species of intact or recovering subtropical forest interior.
When
The fruiting window is shaped by the East Asian monsoon. In Guangdong and surrounding provinces, reliable rains arrive from late May onward and persist through September, keeping soils warm and moist through what is fundamentally a long subtropical summer.
- Late May or June: the first fruit bodies push through.
- July and August: fruiting builds to the consistent peak across most of the range.
- September and October: a tapering tail as temperatures start to cool.
The triggering mechanism follows the standard bolete pattern: sustained rainfall of at least 25-35 mm over 10-14 days, after which - with soil temperatures already warm (18-26 °C in subtropical zones) - fruit bodies emerge within 5-10 days.
How it grows
Appears singly or in small scattered groups on the forest floor among leaf litter and humus.
The mycelium beneath is perennial and bound to its host trees; an established fruiting spot under a suitable oak or chinquapin is likely to produce again in good rainfall years.
In subtropical warmth and humidity, a button can reach full size in 3-6 days, making them easy to miss if checks are infrequent during peak season.
Fruiting conditions
Fruiting is driven by the summer monsoon in subtropical southeastern China. Requires warm, consistently moist soils (18-28 °C) and sustained rainfall. Flushes typically emerge 5-12 days after warm monsoon rain events of at least 25 mm over two weeks. Peak fruiting July-August in Guangdong and surrounding provinces.
Look-alikes
The forests of subtropical southeastern China host a complex of blue-staining boletes spanning the full edibility spectrum from choice to deadly, and correct identification requires genuine expertise.
The most serious danger is confusion with the toxic Neoboletus venenatus and the broader jian shou qing ("Blue-Staining") toxic complex - species responsible for thousands of poisoning incidents and multiple fatalities in Yunnan and southern China.
These deadly species share reddish or brownish caps, yellow to olivaceous pores, and instant blue staining. Separating them from Caloboletus guanyui requires careful attention to the exact tone and pattern of the stipe, the precise pore colour before bruising, and the habitat context.
- Caloboletus bainiugan (white porcini of Chinese markets): lacks the bluing reaction and has a much paler stipe without red tones.
- Boletus reticuloceps and other Boletus s.l. choice edibles in the same region: white-to-yellow non-bluing pores and white, non-bluing flesh, eliminating any real risk of confusion for an attentive forager.
The bitter taste of Caloboletus guanyui (confirmed by tasting a tiny raw shred) rules out most edible boletes in the region, which have mild to pleasant flavour.
Neoboletus venenatus and the jian shou qing toxic complex share reddish to brownish caps, yellow pores that blue instantly, and a reddish stipe - almost identical in gross appearance to Caloboletus guanyui. These deadly species cause severe neurological toxicity (violent autonomic disturbance, hallucinations, agitation) and have caused fatalities in China. Reliable separation requires expert assessment of stipe colouration pattern, pore colour gradients, precise stem base morphology, and habitat context. The bitter taste of a tiny raw shred may help (C. guanyui is intensely bitter; many toxic Neoboletus are not markedly bitter) but cannot be relied upon as the sole test. Never eat any blue-staining bolete from subtropical Asian forests without expert identification.
Tylopilus felleus and related Asian Tylopilus species have pores that turn distinctly pink to dirty pink with age and a dark brown-on-pale reticulum on the stipe; they do not blue on cutting. They share intense bitterness with C. guanyui but the pink pores and non-bluing flesh distinguish them. Not acutely toxic but capable of ruining a dish.
Boletus reticuloceps is a choice edible in the same subtropical Fagaceous forests. It has a tan to coffee-brown cap, white-to-yellow pores that do NOT blue, and white non-bluing flesh. The complete absence of blueing distinguishes it from C. guanyui at a glance. Mild, pleasant taste confirms the separation.
Rubroboletus sinicus has vivid red to orange-red pores (not lemon-yellow) and causes severe gastrointestinal poisoning. The strongly reddish pore surface, visible even before bruising, distinguishes it from C. guanyui's lemon-yellow pores. Any bolete with clearly reddish or orange pores must not be eaten.
Boletus bainiugan is a choice edible sold at Chinese markets. It has a pale cream to buff-white cap, white to cream pores that do NOT blue when pressed, and white non-bluing flesh. The absence of blueing and pleasant mild taste rule out C. guanyui immediately.
A reference guide - never an edibility guarantee. When in doubt, leave it out.
