How to recognise it

Boletus venenatus is a medium to large bolete with an olive-brown to grey-brown cap and vivid yellow flesh that turns intensely blue when cut.

Cap

The cap (8-18 cm) starts convex and flattens with age, with a dry to slightly sticky surface.

Flesh

The most striking diagnostic feature is the rapid, intense bluing of the flesh, tubes, and pores on exposure to air - the colour change begins within seconds of cutting and progresses from lemon-yellow to deep blue-black.

This strong and rapid bluing reaction is shared with several other boletes, both edible and poisonous, and therefore alone is never a sufficient safety criterion.

Pores

The tubes and pores are bright yellow when fresh, also bluing immediately when damaged. The spore print is olive-brown.

Stem

The stem is pale yellow with yellowish reticulation on the upper portion and sometimes faint reddish or brownish colouring near the base. There is no ring and no volva.

Smell & taste

Some specimens have a mildly unpleasant or acrid taste, which is a warning sign but cannot be relied upon to distinguish all poisonous boletes.

Why it's dangerous

Boletus venenatus is a genuinely dangerous species because it occurs in the same habitat and season as highly prized edible boletes in Japan, and the intense bluing reaction - which is the most visible feature - is shared with other bluing boletes of varying edibility.

Because the toxin is uncharacterised, the severity ceiling of poisoning is not definitively established.

Treat any case of suspected B. venenatus ingestion as a medical emergency:

  • Seek hospital care immediately.
  • Retain a photograph or fragment of the consumed mushroom for identification.
  • Contact a poison control centre.

Do not assume symptoms will be mild.

Toxin

The toxin of Boletus venenatus is not yet chemically characterised in the published mycological and toxicological literature.

It belongs to the class of gastrointestinal irritants that cause rapid-onset gastroenteritis, without the delayed multi-organ systemic toxicity seen with amatoxins or orellanine.

The compound(s) may include unstable proteins, lectins, or other heat-labile or heat-stable organic compounds - this is currently unknown.

The lack of a known toxin identity means there is no reliable chemical test to confirm safety, and the species must be avoided entirely.

Symptoms

Onset is rapid, typically within 15 minutes to 2 hours of ingestion.

Symptoms include:

  • Nausea
  • Severe vomiting
  • Watery diarrhoea
  • Abdominal cramping
  • General malaise

Severity depends on the quantity consumed. Most cases resolve within 24-48 hours with supportive treatment, but dehydration can be significant and hospitalisation may be required.

No confirmed permanent organ damage is associated with B. venenatus poisoning in the published literature, but because the toxin is uncharacterised, the full risk profile remains uncertain.

Staying safe

Boletus venenatus was described as a new species in 1989 by Nagasawa, following poisoning incidents in Japan.

It causes severe gastrointestinal poisoning - rapid onset of nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal cramps, typically beginning 15 minutes to 2 hours after ingestion. The poisoning can be severe, with cases of significant dehydration and hospitalisation reported.

The toxin responsible has not been fully chemically characterised. It belongs to the general category of gastrointestinal irritants found in toxic boletes, but the precise compound(s) are not yet established in the published literature.

Because the toxin identity is unknown, no specific antidote or targeted treatment exists - management is supportive (fluid replacement, antiemetics, monitoring).

Any bolete causing immediate gastrointestinal distress after ingestion should be treated as a medical emergency. Do not eat any intensely and rapidly bluing bolete in East Asian oak forest without confirmed expert identification.

Where & when it grows

Habitat

This species is a mycorrhizal partner of oak and Castanopsis in warm-temperate Japanese forest.

It favours the same deciduous broadleaf stands where prized edible boletes such as Boletus reticulatus and Boletus bainiugan (known in Japan as Yamadori-take) occur, which is precisely why it presents a foraging hazard.

The mixed oak forest of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu in summer is rich in boletes of many species, and distinguishing Boletus venenatus from edible co-occurring boletes requires careful attention to multiple features rather than any single character.

It grows singly or scattered on mineral soil, often on slopes under the oak canopy.

When

Boletus venenatus fruits through the warm, humid heart of the Japanese summer - roughly July through September, with fruiting peaking during and immediately after the rainy season (tsuyu).

This timing lands squarely on the prime season for collecting edible boletes in Japanese oak and mixed forest, so the risk of accidentally harvesting it alongside desirable species is real.

Fruiting requires warm soil (above about 15°C) and adequate moisture from summer rainfall; it does not appear in cool spring or late autumn conditions.

How it grows

Fruit bodies emerge singly or in small scattered groups from mineral soil, pushed up from below by the growing stem and sometimes partially buried when young.

Like all boletes in its habitat, this species lives most of its life invisibly - as mycelium threaded through the root zones of its oak and Castanopsis partners, exchanging nutrients in a relationship that can persist for years.

The above-ground mushroom is the brief, visible phase of that hidden life. It does not grow on wood and does not form dense clusters.

Fruiting conditions

Fruits during the warm humid summer in Japanese broadleaf forest; requires warm soil temperatures and adequate summer rainfall; peaks in July-August following the rainy season (tsuyu) in Japan.

Look-alikes

The primary confusion risk is with edible co-occurring boletes in Japanese oak forest.

  • Boletus reticulatus (summer cep) and Boletus bainiugan (Japanese cep) - prized edibles that share the same habitat and season; both have white to pale cream or pale yellow flesh that may blue weakly or not at all, brownish caps, and reticulate stems. The critical separation from B. venenatus is the intensity and speed of the bluing reaction: edible boletes in this complex do not blue nearly as quickly or as deeply.
  • Neoboletus luridiformis (scarlet-stemmed bolete) - also blues intensely but has orange-red pores and orange-red stem colouration that are absent in B. venenatus.
  • Rubroboletus satanas (Satan's bolete) - has red pores and red lower stem colouring, and is also toxic; its red pore surface makes it identifiable even without knowing the species.

No edible bolete in Japan has both the rapid intense bluing of B. venenatus AND the plain olive-brown cap and yellow pores without any red component - this combination should always trigger rejection of the specimen.

Japanese cep / Yamadori-take

Boletus bainiugan is a prized edible East Asian cep with pale to whitish flesh that barely blues or blues only faintly; its cap is a rich warm brown, the stem has fine pale reticulation, and the taste is mild and pleasant. The intense, rapid bluing of Boletus venenatus - turning blue-black within seconds - does not occur in bainiugan.

Lurid bolete

Suillellus luridus also blues intensely and rapidly but has unmistakable orange-red pores and a stem with orange-red reticulation. Boletus venenatus has yellow pores and lacks red colouration entirely. Both species are poisonous and should be avoided.

Satan's bolete

Rubroboletus satanas has blood-red pores, a red lower stem, and a whitish-grey cap - a very different colour combination from the olive-brown cap and yellow pores of Boletus venenatus. Both species are poisonous. The red pore surface of R. satanas is diagnostic and immediately visible in the field.

Scarlet-stemmed bolete

Neoboletus luridiformis shares intense bluing and a broadly similar cap colour, but has bright orange-red pores and orange-red stem colouration without reticulation. Boletus venenatus has yellow pores and a yellow reticulate stem with no red component.

Summer cep

Boletus reticulatus has pale cream to pale yellow flesh that blues slowly or not at all - the bluing reaction is weak and gradual if present at all - a more tan to ochre-brown cap with a distinctly dry, cracked appearance in dry weather, and a pleasant mushroom odour. Boletus venenatus blues intensely and almost immediately on cutting, within 10-20 seconds. If the cut flesh turns deep blue rapidly, reject the specimen.
