How to recognise it

Austroboletus austrovirens is one of the more visually striking boletes of eastern Australia, distinguished most immediately by its olive-green to greenish-yellow cap and viscid surface when fresh.

Cap

The cap runs 5-12 cm across, starting with the tight convex shape typical of boletes and broadening to a flat or slightly depressed dome with age.

The most useful identification feature at a glance is the colour: fresh caps in good condition carry genuine green tones - olive-green, greenish-yellow, or yellow-ochre with a clear greenish cast - which fade toward yellow-ochre or buff in dry or old specimens, but are vivid and unmistakable in moist, young material.

The surface is distinctly sticky when moist, leaving a slight shine even after a light touch.

Gills / Pores

Beneath the cap, the pore layer is white to pale cream in young specimens, ageing to pale yellowish-cream; pores are small and circular, not angular or irregular; tubes run 8-14 mm deep.

Critically, the pores and flesh do not blue when bruised or cut - press a pore surface firmly and leave it exposed to air; if no blue-green darkening develops within two to three minutes, that is consistent with Austroboletus austrovirens.

Stem

The stipe is stout and firm, 6-14 cm tall, bearing a fine to moderate reticulate network on its surface - less dramatically pitted than the closely related A. lacunosus, but clearly textured rather than smooth.

Stipe colour is pale cream to whitish-buff, often with yellowish or ochre tones, sometimes with faint reddish tints at the base.

Flesh

Flesh throughout is white to very pale cream and stays that way on cutting; no reddening, no blueing, no significant colour change.

Spore print dull olive-brown to brownish-ochre.

Where & when it grows

Habitat

Austroboletus austrovirens is an obligate ectomycorrhizal species: it cannot fruit without a living eucalyptus partner.

The symbiosis operates underground, with fungal threads interweaving around tree root tips, exchanging mineral nutrients (particularly phosphorus) for plant sugars - a partnership that can persist for the lifetime of the tree. Above ground, we see only the temporary fruiting body, the mushroom, which appears in autumn when conditions allow.

Look for it in dry and wet sclerophyll eucalyptus forest - ranging from open, grassy eucalypt woodland to taller mixed-species forest - on well-drained, acidic soils with a reasonable layer of leaf litter and duff.

Like most mycorrhizal boletes, it is largely absent from logged, heavily disturbed, or heavily managed land; the underground partnership needs years or decades to establish.

Where you find it once under a mature eucalyptus tree, the same patch will often fruit again in future years, because the mycelial network persists through summer dormancy.

Documented from Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria; its full range in Australia has not been comprehensively mapped.

When

The fruiting season runs through Southern Hemisphere autumn - broadly March to June, with peak abundance in April and May.

The trigger is the classic autumn combination: meaningful rainfall rehydrating soils dried by summer heat, combined with cooling soil temperatures dropping toward the 10-15 °C range that boletes in this group prefer.

A soil temperature drop below approximately 15 °C, combined with at least 20-30 mm of rain in the preceding two weeks, typically produces a flush, with caps emerging roughly 10-16 days after a good rain event.

Timing shifts slightly with latitude and elevation: warmer coastal sites in Queensland may not fruit until May, while cooler Victorian sites can begin in March in a wet year.

The species is absent during summer heat and winter cold.

How it grows

Solitary or loosely scattered in small groups, never forming dense clusters or ring formations. Fruiting bodies arise individually from the soil, directly above the network of mycorrhizal threads below.

As an obligate partner of mature eucalypts, fruiting density is inherently limited - you are unlikely to find more than a handful of specimens in one place, even in a good year.

The fruiting body expands over several days from a compact button, cap tightly closed, to a broad, open specimen. The sticky green cap is easiest to spot in the leaf litter while specimens are still young and bright.

Fruiting conditions

Fruiting triggered in austral autumn (March-June) when soil temperatures cool to 9-15 °C and at least 20 mm of rainfall accumulates in the preceding two weeks. Caps emerge 10-16 days after a triggering rain event, consistent with the general flush-lag pattern of ectomycorrhizal eucalypt-associated boletes in southeastern Australia. Fruiting ceases in summer heat and winter cold.

Look-alikes

The most significant realistic confusion risk is with other boletes in the same habitat, particularly the closely related Austroboletus lacunosus.

The critical visual difference is the stipe: A. lacunosus has a dramatically lacunose (deeply pitted) stipe - one of the most distinctive structures among Australian boletes - while A. austrovirens has a merely reticulate (net-ridged) stipe that is clearly less extreme.

The greenish cap colour of A. austrovirens is also more vivid and reliably present than in A. lacunosus, which is brown to ochre.

Suillus species (pine boletes) may be greenish-capped in some forms but always grow under introduced pines, never native eucalypts, and typically have slimy caps and a ring or ring-zone on the stipe.

In Australian eucalypt forest, no established deadly boletes are known; the deadly Rubroboletus and Neoboletus species with red pores and dramatic blueing are Northern Hemisphere taxa not reliably recorded in native Australian forest.

As a standing safety rule: never eat any bolete with red or orange pores, or any bolete that blues prominently when cut - neither of those features applies to A. austrovirens.

Blue-staining boletes

Several boletes in eucalypt forest in Australia blue (turn vivid blue-green within seconds) when the flesh or pore surface is bruised or cut. Austroboletus austrovirens does not blue at all. This bluing reaction is the single most important safety test when handling boletes: if any bluing occurs, do not eat the mushroom. Some blue-staining boletes in Australia cause gastrointestinal illness and should be considered unsafe.

New Zealand Austroboletus

A. novae-zelandiae is a related species occurring in New Zealand's Nothofagus and eucalypt plantings. It has a similar reticulate stipe and mild edibility status, but its cap tends toward brown or brownish-ochre rather than the pronounced greenish-yellow of A. austrovirens, and it is primarily associated with Nothofagus rather than native eucalypts. Where ranges overlap in planted settings, careful comparison of cap colour and host tree is needed.

Pitted Austroboletus

The closest relative in the same habitat and season. A. lacunosus has a dramatically lacunose (deeply pitted) stipe - a sponge-like texture with deep irregular cavities - compared to the merely reticulate (net-ridged) stipe of A. austrovirens. The cap of A. lacunosus is ochre-brown to reddish-chestnut and not viscid, whereas A. austrovirens has an olive-green to greenish-yellow viscid cap. Both have non-bluing cream pores and are considered edible, but visually they are distinct.

Slippery jack and other Suillus species

Suillus species grow exclusively under introduced conifers (pines) in Australia, never in native eucalypt forest. They typically have a distinctly slimy cap in wet conditions, a gelatinous ring or ring-zone on the stipe, and granular-dotted (not reticulate) stipe texture. Some Suillus species have yellowish or ochre caps with greenish tints, but the conifer habitat alone eliminates any confusion with A. austrovirens in native bush.

In the kitchen

Picking & cleaning

If collecting, choose young to mid-maturity specimens:

  • Cap firmly convex to just beginning to flatten.
  • Pore surface white to cream, not yet softened or darkened.
  • Flesh firm, without soft or waterlogged areas.

Confirm the green viscid cap, non-bluing pores, reticulate stipe, and white non-staining flesh before collection.

Cut the stipe cleanly at the base with a knife, leaving the mycelial zone undisturbed. Because the species is mycorrhizal and not abundant, collect conservatively - take only what you will use from a given site.

  • Transport open in a basket, not a sealed plastic bag.
  • The sticky cap surface can pick up debris; wipe with a damp cloth rather than washing.
  • Use within two days; refrigerate promptly.

Given the limited edibility documentation, err toward smaller initial portions if this is your first encounter.

Cooking

In the limited number of documented eating records, Austroboletus austrovirens has been described as mild in flavour - not assertive, with a pleasant nutty-earthy quality consistent with the Austroboletus genus.

Young, firm specimens in good condition are the best candidates for the table. The sticky cap surface is removed or wiped clean; a damp cloth rather than washing keeps the flesh from waterlogging.

Like most boletes it responds well to high-heat sautéing in butter or olive oil, which drives off moisture and concentrates flavour. Suitable in pasta, risotto, or mixed-mushroom preparations where a mild bolete flavour is welcome. Avoid eating raw.

The flavour is honest and pleasant rather than spectacular; the primary reward of this species in the kitchen lies in the context - a distinctive and quietly beautiful mushroom of the Australian bush.

Good to know

Austroboletus austrovirens is catalogued in Australian mycological literature without reports of toxicity, and the current consensus treats it as edible.

However, published records are sparse and no formal toxicological testing of this species is documented. It has not been validated with the systematic safety data available for commercially important edible species.

For this reason - not because of any known toxin, but because of the genuine absence of safety data at scale - it warrants caution, particularly for first-time tasters and those with any history of mushroom sensitivity.

Standard bolete safety precautions apply universally:

  • Confirm the identification carefully: green viscid cap, non-bluing cream pores, reticulate stipe, white non-staining flesh.
  • Do not eat any bolete that blues when cut or has red pore surfaces.
  • Cook thoroughly before eating, as raw boletes of many species cause gastrointestinal distress.
  • Try a small amount initially and wait 24 hours before consuming more.
